Keep his body clean first of all. When he sits up for the first month, tell him to put a pillow on his belly and hug it with one hand while assisting getting up with the other hand. Try not to strain his stomach in anyway at first. as time passes he will be able to do more and more.should also take stool softeners, this will make all the difference in the world. This will not be easy for him, try to be there for him, only if you to are on good terms.

Aside from the obvious, try increasing his protien intake. Protiens are used to repair muscle and tissue. It's no "quick fix" but will help his body do it's job. Don't overdo it though. I suggest peanut butter if he likes it. I'd avoid milk, it's high in protien but also high in lactic acid.

He must NEVER carry anything heavy. If he's into gardening, he must avoid carrying heavy pots and tools.
He must also take complete rest and not walk about too much.

I wish him a speedy recovery!

No heavy lifting, no exercising until the doc says ok. Keep the incision clean and dry. I think that's it.
