Start with the deeds to the house, they should tell you quite a lot

Local history archive (maybe at the library) will have old directories going back before 1900 - maybe to the middle of the previous century, depending on where you are. Use these to find who lived in your house since it was built.

Our house had a board nailed to the rafters with builder's name and date of completion (1908).

Old maps will help as well as the deeds to the house.

You could try the library and see if they have a local history section. If the town you are in has a museum try there too. What about the census?

Try looking in the census returns. UK ones are now available online.

You can look at deeds.

You can look in old trade directories (e.g. Kelly's) to see if there was a business there.
