gotta put the baby somewhere when the doctor takes care of the after-birth, right! Besides, the baby needs to hear the heart beat that is has heard for the last 35 plus weeks, right!

i've heard that if the mother holds the baby right after delivery, it helps the contractions to deliver the placenta.

the pressure on the belly helps the fluids to "come out". And helps release the placenta. Seriously. Wouldn't you rather have your baby on your belly than someone pushing on it to help get all the fluids out.
