I think the default number for all answering machines is 4 1's. When your answering machine beeps for you to leave a message dial 4 1's.

You have to set a (usually) 4-digit code for your answering machine - say it's 1-2-3-4 - then phone your home number, listen to your answer message, and on the beep hit *1234. It should then play any messages for you.

Some phone companies let you do this at an extra fee on top of your subscription.

I'm not too sure how it works now: Dial your home number and then dial '1' followed by your PIN....

Better to give your phone company a call.
