The extra pound is being added twice. I don't remember the pound sign, so I'm going to use dollar signs.
$30 chipped in, $10 each from 3 men.
Bottle of wine, $25.
$5 left over: $1 to each man and $2 to the waiter (1+1+1+2=5)
Each man paid $10, got $1 back, paid a total of $9.
$9X3= $27, + $2 tip, is $29. You are missing $1, you aren't having $2 extra.
Here's the solution anyways:
Multiplication cannot be used to solve an equation started by addition/subtraction.
Each man got, in reality, $1.67 back. To keep things even, each man gave $0.67 to the waiter. 0.67+0.67+0.67= $2.00 (due to the nature of 2/3, the numbers only add up that way for currency purposes). This leaved $1 to each man.
$25 + $2 + $1 + $1 + $1 = $30. Problem solved.

Because they didnt put £9 each in the kitty, you just said they did. They each put in £10, but got £1 back and had £2 over which they gave to the waiter, so all in all the bottle of wine cost them £8.33r each, with £2 left over and £3 back to share 3 x 8.33r = £25, + £3 + £2. So really they should have had £1.66r back each, add this to the £8.33 each they put in for the bottle and you get £10, which they started with each.

They each put in £10 (3x£10 = £30)
£30 in the kitty for the bottle of wine.
OUT OF STOCK - £30 wine.
IN STOCK - £25wine
£5 change = £1.666666666666666666666666
As you cant get £0.066666666666 (6.6666666p)
The men wisely decide to tip the Waiter £2 and have change of £3 (£30-£25=£5-(3x£1)=£2 tip for waiter
So in theory yes the men have all put in £9 and received £1 change from the original £30.
Which does actually equal £27 (either £9x3 or £30-£3)
But effectively each man has contributed as follows.
To the wine :- £25/3 = £8.33 (to nearest 1p)
To the tip :- £2/3 = £0.67 (to nearest 1p)
But.................. If you add this up you get as follows
£8.33 + £8.33 + £8.33 = £24.99 for the wine, and......
£0.67 + £0.67 + £0.67 = £2.01 for the tip.
So to make this correct you must say that............
For the wine 2 men contributed £8.33 and 1 man £8.34 to make the total £25.
And, for the tip the man who contirbuted £8.34 for the wine pays £0.66 towards the tip whilst the other 2 pay £0.67 totalling £2.
And therefore all three men will have paid £9 each.

well, first you added this wrong. you added the tip to the waiter twice, you have 3*9= 27 + 2 for the tip.
But the whole thing is just a play on numbers.
there is no extra $2.00. they each put in $10.00, $25.00 went for the wine, Each got $1.00 back and the waiter got $2.00.
$25.00 + $2.00 + $3.00= $30.00

You subtract the 2, not add it, cuz they didn't pay 27 for the wine, they paid 25.
