I mean, many preachers and pastors say that God is Soverign and that God does and can do whatever He wants to. Dosen't that sound kind of negative? I mean, if you read the Bible-espcieally the book of Psalms, you see that God is loving, mercifull, compassionate, gracious, etc etc etc.

Uh...does every Psalm say that?
And most people that believe in God also believe that He flooded the earth....that's seems a little negative. That doesn't mean he's not loving.

I think sometimes we who are citizens of nations based upon democracy have a hard time understanding the concept of rule by a king. Because we are so accustomed to basically being able to call all the shots by the majority rule we have a hard time understanding how a king can be soverign over his kingdom and at the same time always make decisions that are in the best interest of his servants. We want to be the ones who make the decisions about what is right and wrong. We want to call all the shots rather than bow in submission to the will of our God.

We have developed a culture in the United States, for instance, where people just don't like to be told what to do. Even when our actions can lead to great hurt and damage to ourselves and our countrymen, we believe that we should have the right to act in any way we choose as long as it doesn't infringe upon the rights of others or directly cause them damage. We have come to believe that the individual can so isolate himself from society that it is really possible to do things "in the privacy of my home" that won't eventually affect society. That just isn't possible.

So if we truly understand the nature of God (that He is soverign over all things but because of His love He will always do what is in our best interest and will only restrict us from doing things that will harm us) we can better accept our role in His kingdom as being good servants to an awesome loving King.

Don't get me wrong. I really feel blessed to live in a nation based upon democratic rule, but I think we Christians must be careful to understand that the kingdom of God is not a democracy. We are called to be servants of Him and submit to His will in all things.

Sovereign means having supreme rank, power, or authority. He has this over all of heaven and earth. Yet the way in which God has chosen to use His sovereignty has been in a completely merciful and loving way...dying for the sins of the world!

It also says God is no respecter of person

so He will not force anyone to follow the truth,
however that dose not omit them from judgment

Act 10:34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

Hebrews 4:13
13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

God knows all, and he IS in control

Psalm 94:11
The LORD knows the thoughts of man; he knows that they are futile.

Proverbs 16:9
The heart of man plans his way,but the LORD establishes his steps.

--There is a reason for all- and it is to bring Glory to God. He is all knowing! And he is definately Soverign.

Romans 9:14-18

14What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! 15For he says to Moses,
"I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,
and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion."[f] 16It does not, therefore, depend on man's desire or effort, but on God's mercy. 17For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: "I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth."[g] 18Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.

If you read the rest of the bible, you'll see that he is vengeful and likes to kill people with little provocation. He killed a bunch of kids by sicking bears on them. Come on.

I think it's crap. How can the unseen and unknowable be sovereign and who are clerics to tell us "his" will?
