My wedding dress had two different types it could be bustled into - french (big poof near the butt) and regular (they just tie the train higher so you can move around). I'm sure there are different ways you can tie it - but those are the only two I know of.

There is the french bustle and the traditional bustle. They are slightly different and the place that is altering your wedding dress should be able to show both of them to you. Keep in mind, if you have a lot of design and beading in the back near the bottom, then you will probably want to go with the traditional bustle. French bustles are more fancy looking. Since I had a lot of detail on my gown near the bottom hem, I went with the traditional one so people could still see the detail in the dress even when it was in a bustle.

But basically there are two different bustles. One attaches small buttons on your butt and loops on the skirt, and the skirt is brought up and buttoned in place. I think this style is called traditional.

Then there is a french style, which involves strings underneath the skirt that get tied together. It's more complicated, but this is the more common form nowadays, I think. It can support more weight, I think, then the traditional.

Your seamstress, however, will be able to tell you specifically what type of bustle you will need for your dress, depending on the fabric and decorations.

One kind take the extra material and pulls straight up, attaching it to your bottom, and the other pulls the extra material under, and creats a poof. The style of your dress will dictate the bustle.
