enthusiasts like manual because it gives better mileage and they feel more control. Most people prefer automatic - the mileage difference is lessening. Automatic gives better resale value in most cars. Go automatic unless you have a really good reason for wanting manual.

I learned on a manual and really like the control in winter weather. I switched to an automatic sedan about 15 years ago, and found by just putting the vehilcle in a lower gear on slippery winter roads I got just as good control. I live in a northern climate where the winters are six months long and it can snow three feet or more overnight. About two years ago my husband and I switched from driving sedans and all the headaches of getting stuck in winter, to driving SUVs. A 4WD is imperative in this climate if a person wants to get to work or even out of the subdivision on a daily basis in winter. Automatics are so good now, that 4WDs are now equiped with buttons on the dash or a quick stick shift to switch from AWD to 4WD and back again.
If you live in the north, or if you live in a remote rural area where road conditions are poor, you can get an automatic SUV or pickup truck that is also 4WD. If you live in a city with good weather and lots of stop and go traffic, and lots of highway miles, for sure go with the automatic.
If you want the fun of feeling like you are driving a race car, going with the manual will suit you. But when diverting a near accident, the automatic keeps you from stalling. For safety, I would go with an automatic... but I'm older now and more cautious too!

The argument that Manual get better gas mileage is not as true as it used to be. For most people, there is no difference between automatic and standard (manual) transmission for gas mileage. Why? Because the computers are quite good now and most people drive like idiots.
I have a friend who says you aren't driving the car if it isn't a standard transmission. I reply to them that you aren't starting the car if it isn't a manual choke. Which is ridiculous.
I prefer the automatic transmission. Why? I am a lazy driver. I don't want to have to think about shifting. In fact I am quite rusty at driving a standard transmission and would have some difficulty in using one now. Oh and by the way, I have a Prius for most of my driving and you can't get one in standard.

for me, the best is the automatic since manual is a lot of extremities work, changing gears and clutching additional to your brake and gas, plus you need full concentration while driving the stick shift. regarding the phase, manual is faster since you can control your gear rather than waiting for the gear to kick in with the automatic.

I always liked manual. You have more control and there is less parts to wear out. Seems like the automatics are a little quicker on takeoff. It may be I'm a little slow on take off :-)

I prefer manual. I fell like I am more in control when driving a manual, especially in snow. But, that is just my preference
