I can give my 8 week old puppy formula? He likes to take my son's bottles and drink the milk, but I don't allow him to do this because it's human formula. I do however have some puppy formula & I was wondering if I could give him this? It seems like he isnt weened off of his mother yet, even though he's away from her now & eat's regular puppy food. I wouldn't give him much, maybe a bottle or two a week, just enough to wean him compleatly off of it.

I suppose you could give him puppy formula (i.e. Esbilac) -- however there really isn't any reason for it. An 8 week old puppy doesn't need milk replacement...they should be well-weaned.

Of course he wants your son's formula for the same reason he wants anything you're eating -- it smells good, and your son is eating it! Doesn't necessarily mean he's not weaned (unless his breeder really screwed up) or yearns for his mother's milk.

Bottom line: He doesn't need to be weaned. Be tough, keep the baby bottle out of his reach.

However, if it will make you feel better canine milk replacement likely won't hurt him -- although it may well give him diarrhea.

Good luck.

Your puppy doesn't need the puppy formula any more. Even a weaned puppy will still try to nurse on mom if given the opportunity.

If you decide to let him have some, I wouldn't do it via a bottle at least, but instead make him take it in a dish, the same way he drinks water. Using a bottle is too much like proper nursing, which your puppy doesn't really need at this age.

I wouldn't give your puppy any formula. If he is eating puppy food now, it would kind of be like regressing to get him back on the formula. Puppies like to eat anything and he is probably drawn to the bottle because it smells good not because he actually needs it.

Hes weaned, he just likes it, but he doesn't need it. I don't think it would hurt him to use up what is left of your formula by putting a little on his kibble every day, but I wouldn't buy anymore for him.

Human formula is not good for him, keep him away from your sons bottles.

i would say give it to him as a treat, (puppy fromula, not human) however if you completely avoided giving it to him at the age he is it would be no big deal..they are generally weaned at 7 wks. so at 8 wks. it would indeed be nothing more than a yummy treat. of course if he was the runt or vewry sickly at birth you may want to put him on the formula to build him up maybe for another week and a half to two weeks. but you mentioned nothing about him being a runt or sickly so that is probally not neccassary. enjoy your pup. and good luck.

The answer to your question would be "YES",it will be ok to give him some puppy formula, but never human formula.Even after 8 weeks old a puppy will drink milk and love it.Very safe and he should lap it up out of his feeding dish.

He does not need the milk and you should not encourage it. Human milk is probably edible for him in small doses, but does not contibute to his health or nutrition in a positive way. At eight weeks he should be on solid food.

Of course he will WANT the milk because it tastes good to him. That's the same reason I like donuts, but we can't have what we want all the time can we?

for a couple of weeks it cannot hurt to give him the puppy milk as well.....the need to suckle is instinct need.......

altho he will eat the food, cos afterall hungry enough you eat.......you may want to start off with moist type puppy food and progress as needed

thanks for caring and enjoy this time with your special friend
