...so, by definition, in the attempt to quiet their minds, would Buddhists not be demons? Does this sound like the most incredibly closed-minded cliche to anyone else?

Doesn't matter, Buddhists in the eyes of Christians are going to hell anyway. Let them be ignorant.

An Idle mind for short time is fine. But an Idle mind for a long time is surely a devils playground .

To say it is closed minded is to not understand. As others have stated, an idle mind is not the same as a quiet mind. Buddhist, when they meditate try to free their mind of ALL thought, by this they can get closer to non-attachment. Idle, means you are not using your mind and thus any passing thought is able to reside there. Also, I've only heard that "idle hands are the devil's tools", which is essentially the same thing. If you aren't using your mind for good, what other option is there?

It's "Idle hands are the Devil's playground" and it is not in the Bible, nor is it close minded. Like most cliche's or platitudes, it has some basis in truth. When people (especially younger people) have a lot of free time plus little inclination toward hobbies, they tend to engage in activities that get them in trouble. As supporting evidence, one might point out the rise in juvenile delinquency as child labor laws push the minimum age for a job ever further upward, leaving kids idle and unsupervised after school and in the summer.

A quiet mind is not the same thing as an idle mind.

And idle mind is the devils playground for the very reason that it can easily wander to this or that vice. A quiet mind, doesn't wander like that.

thanks

It is a limited cliche. There is some truth to it though. A bored and restless person who does'nt have anything constructive to do and no guidance may do alternative things for excitement, that may be negative to his/her well being, such as drugs, alcohol, destructive pranks, etc. Hence the creation of this cliche.
Then there are those that meditate or use their minds in a creative way when there are idle time periods, such as indulging in hobbies, helping others, etc. Obviously, no devils involved in these things.

An idle mind isn't the same thing as an empty, peaceful mind.

I think that saying came from our mothers way back when when mothers had to have a witty little saying like the old wives tales? Also I vote the Scout 485 gets best answer, that was witty!

A quiet mind is not an idle one.

Plus I don't believe in demons, so there you go.
