It came to Judaism late, probably in the Middle Ages. Some say that the two Dalets (one inverted over the other) with the Vav deleted are what make it up, thus it is a cryptonymn for David.
There are seven points, the six outer of course, but the inner one is for The Ineffable G_d. Thus it is a heavenly star. The five pointed one is the earthly star, or star of man.
Regarding what does a symbol mean: I must pass on that. Symbols, you see, have whatever meaning one wishes to invest in them. No more, no less. What do you see in that star? Meditate on it a bit and see where it takes you.
The Freemasons do not use the Star of David, we use a Square and Compasses. You may make of that statement what you will, but look closely. There is no six-pointed star unless YOU connect points with lines that are not there.

The Star of David is a hexagram, long regarded as very powerful magickal symbol (which is why both Kabbalists and Masons utilize it). It became the Jewish symbol by representing the intermingling of Heaven and Earth, with the upright triangle representing the earth and the inverted triangle representing Heaven. It's a symbol of fusion.

As well said by neoart symbols are much like numerology. If you have ever read LAw of fives in that discordian book it pokes fun yet makes logical sense that like an alphabet it is you that puts a value to something. If from the start of things we said 6 was good and seven was bad would you believe the opposite now? What you apply to things goes a very far way.

As to date the Star of David is a mystery , the triangles, possibly tie in with the pyramids. It could possibly have came from Abraham as he came out of the land of Ur. I believe it has dual meanings. It is also called Shield Of David and also called Seal of Solomon.Someone told me the name of God was on it., the one King David wore.

First question...I don't know
second question...The points of the star are six, the number for mans imperfection...seven is the perfect number. remember 666 in Revelation? It means to the third degree the number six does not come close to 7.So the mark is a mans number his way of life mind and his work are imperfect.
Third question...God was the one who had the builders of the temple use this in the decor.
Fourth questions...Masons use it to remind them the builders of the temple were experts.
Furthermore, the inverted triangle into the the other triangle is Mary Magdalene and Jesus, together, She was Jesus close companion, and lover.

The star of David is made of two triangles. One points up, the other points down showing that when I look to God, God will look to me.
