I have a few American cookbooks and they sometimes state that you should add a stick of butter. Does anyone know exactly how much this is in ounces or grams? I don't think it is a full pat of butter.....??

A "stick" is a quarter of a pound (4 ounces). It is also 8 tablespoons or half a cup (don't measure tub butter or margarine this way, it has air in it that changes the volume). Finally it is 125 ml or approximately 114 grams in metric. If you are in Canada, some brands of butter can be bought in sticks (President's Choice and Latancia). Some margarine comes in squares which are equivalent to sticks.

In the USA, butter is divided into 4 equal quarters, and wrapped individually. I'm not sure how much it is, exactly, but I know that they are divided length-wise. I didn't know this either, until my sister moved to New York.
