One anthropologist who studied hinduism wrote a book on it called "The 330 Million Gods" as this was his best guess on the number of avatars and deities -- but yet Hinduism is provisionally monotheistic as all these gods come from one source and are just different faces of it.

The idea of leaving food for the gods is to offer spiritual, not literal sustinence. In fact, it is considered acceptable to consume the food after a reasonable period if it is food that can withstand being out for a period of time (ie: steak after 24 hours would be a no-no, an apple that hadn't been cut into pieces, certainly).

There are over 330 million Dieties in the Hindu belief. However, there is the belief that there is only one God who manifest himself in and as all. The purpose of the many is simply a means of focusing on the Diety of preferrence for the purpose He/She is needed for. Every Deity represents something, be it strength, wealth, heath, protection, etc. The 'idol' as you call it is just a focal point and is not that 'it' is what is worshiped.
Hindus don't see this as 'idol worship', only those who do not understand and prefer to riducule because of ignorance.

MAny faiths believe in an overall god, and other gods to take care of other aspects.

Much like the president of a company and all his support staff.

Worry about your own spiritual enrichment so that you may help others, don't get off the task of finding your own salvation in Christ the Lord. Strengthen your own believes.
