The last wedding I went to was performed by a Justice of the Peace in a park. They had rented a pavilion in case of rain, but it was a lovely day, and the chairs were set up outside. The vows were secular but just as meaningful and binding as some that call on a mythical being to "bless" them. People read from texts that were special to themselves and the couple, including a passage from "Winnie the Pooh"! There was a string quartet and a lovely reception afterwards.

In at least one state (Alaska, I think), anybody can perform ONE marriage ceremony - check with your own state for the rules.

Unitarian ministers are often glad to perform secular weddings, BTW, as Unitarians have no dogma, and the ministers enjoy being useful that way even if you don't go to their church.

Depends which country you are in. My first marriage was in Chelsea Regsitry office on the King's Road where many celebrities have got married (whoo hoo!) but these days in the UK you can get married pretty much anywhere (castles, stately homes etc) with any ceremony you care to name. There are special services for the non religious provided by the National Secular Society and they even provide a 'minister'.

Thats the UK though I would expect the US has something similar.

Call around to churches--they may have certain policies about who is allowed to get married in their church and who can or can't officiate. Also, the minister there may not allow you to make changes from the standard vows, but you want to write and use your own.

For example, a church may expect you to have their minister marry you even though you are not a member there. Or, some churches will simply charge a fee for the use of their church for the wedding and you find and hire a minister to marry you there.

No matter what, you just have to do your homework if you don't have a "home church" or are not a member of one. You can work this out.

There are ministers that aren't tied to any particular faith. You can also go to the Universal Life Church and become an ordained minister for free, which will give legal status in most states to officiate at weddings. They also have an online directory of those ordained and willing to officiate in most areas. Then, you just rent a hall and have the wedding. The person officiating ought to have practiced the ceremony, and there are books and methods available online.

Good luck.

Marriage is a bond between three persons. the equation is like this 1+1+1=1. This is one man, one woman and one God. If all three are not in the mix then it is not a marriage. The whole idea is to make some type of commitment that means something. If it is just an exercises to you, what is the point? Go buy a marriage license and find a witness to sign it, send it to the address as instructed and be married on paper. Sounds like a formality to me.
Marriage is marriage, or it is not. the paperwork has very little to do with it, other then for legal purposes, insurance, finances, taxes, etc.

go look for a pastor, be picky, talk to a couple of them, you will know when u find the right one, getting married is a big desision, u want all odds going the rite way, so the rite pastor can really get u started on the rite foot, u wont be sorry looking for the rite guy, hit 4 or 5 different denominations, thats why there are so many, people respond better to some more than others, u will be glad u did it this way

I got married by the captain of an old river boat in Kentucky. It was so much fun! It took 15 minutes, and then we partied with our friends and family for 3 hours while cruising up and down the river!!!

I didn't have one either. I called a very liberal Unitarian church and had a minister marry us in a non-religious ceremony in a hotel ballroom
