I got a ticket for an expired meter (I got to my car as she started to write it) The street sign had posted on it "2hr parking from 9am - 10pm", however my ticket says "2hr parking from 830am-10pm). Is there a way that I can avoid paying the ticket, and how should I state my case?

You were in violation and you know it from what you've said. You were the one responsible for the car. You were the one that was responsible for putting money into the meter. You were the one that was supposed to be responsible for keeping track of the time, and didn't. Now you are the one responsible for the parking fee. You won't win, so pay up.

What time were you parked there? Did you get the ticket before 9 am? And was the ticket issued before 9 am (as written on the ticket)? If so, then you should take a photo of the sign and challenge it in court.
However, if the ticket was issued after 9, it was your fault for not putting money in the meter and you should pay the ticket.

That's not a fatal error, unless the ticket was written between 10:30 & 11:00 AM. If it was, bring a picture of the sign to court and contest the ticket. If the ticket was written after 11:00 AM, pay it.

Try to fight it. I am in law, and trust me, the worse mistake someone can make is to just "accept" it and pay the ticket. VERY often, when you make a 'court' date, it will end up being cancelled (there are so many people trying to get out of tickets, it would be impossible to have court sessions for every one).
My dad got a speeding ticket and scheduled a court date (to fight it). They ended up cancelling it and he didn't have to pay a cent.
So don't give in!! But be prepared to go to court (if it isn't waived) and have evidence. Like others said, take pictures of the sign. Bring the original ticket. Have some sort of a timeline made out (the time you parked and the time you got back into your car). And be ready to prove WHY the incorrect information would affect the situation, otherwise. What would have happened had the ticket said 9am-10pm? Would things be any different? You may have a hard time proving that, unless you were parked out there close to 8am-9am.
But even so, I would still bring it to court because there is a good chance you won't have to pay it, if they decide not to pursue it.

Take a picture of that sign and bring it to court. If the meter maid gave you a ticket between 8:30am and 9:00am then you can get out of the ticket. She should lose her job for that too. That is not fair. If you got the ticket between 9:00am and 10pm then there is really nothing you can do. Just pay the ticket.

The most vital part of the ticket will be the part were it stated Time first seen and then of course Time of issue (evidencing a 2hrs period). If this is over a 2hr period your paying despite what the sign says..

I have found it takes far less time to just pay the ticket. If you fight it you will have to go to court and wait and wait and wait. Unless you have unlimited time I would pay it.
This only apples to parking tickets. Moving violations should always go to court. There is always a chance the officer will not show up.

I don't think you can avoid the ticket, but definitely get a picture of the sign and take it to court. You never know, they could reduce the ticket or throw it out!

Take a picture of the sign and fight it in court. If you catch the judge on a good day, the ticket might get dismissed. Not much more you can do.

Pay the fine and then take a picture of the street sign and your ticket and take it to the court house and show the judge that hey which one is right. Did you ask her about it. and if it is a meter, then you have to put enough coins in to keep the meter going.
