dang everyone is really getting on your case about being in the airforce huh? ii wouldnt say its the easiest branch, but definatly the luckiest! you guys get amenities and luxuries that other branches dont, but the fun doesnt start until after basic! run as much as you can, 2 to 3 miles every other day if possible (thats what you will be doing in basic every morning at 5am!)on your off days do push ups and sit ups, you really dont need to weight train, push ups situps and running are everything you need to do to get you in shape. and you can make phone calls once a week for about 5 minutes. just long enough for you to really miss home! good luck soldier!!

You will like the Air Force, they are an elite group. I have been Air Force Aux/Civil Air Patrol for 10 years.
Phone calls are limited during basic training. It all depends on the commander. You are there to become not only a man but a soldier, they tear you down and build you up as a soldier. It will be hard but it will make you the best you can be in all aspects of life.
I have been involved in many Basic Training Camps for youth in the CAP. I have also been an instructor. I have seen the changes through pain and suffering. It is not easy but you will be better for it.
It is best to try to get in shape now it will help you succeed with less pain. Get to a gym, run the treadmill, built muscle, and lose any excess weight. The ones that I have seen do the worst at camp were the ones totally out of shape (overweight, less muscle). Start running now, start small and build on it each day going just a little further. You need to develope stamina and your lungs. Every branch of military believes in running. With the youth I had to run them every month (not at camp) and time them. It they did not meet the time they were given a warning. By the next month they must meet the time or they dont get rank.
So running is the most important and the Air Force takes it seriously. You must also meet a weight requirement for camp. My neice did not meet her requirement when she arrived at camp (San Antonio) and she was sent home.
Try your best, You will do fine, and be a great addition to the corp.

Well congrats! BMT is pretty easy, but you should at least be able to run 2 miles, do about 60 sit ups, and 25 push ups. You'll have to do pull ups as well. The great thing about training is that you'll be doing it every day so you'll be amazed at how quickly your body will adapt. As far as phone calls, its up to your instructor. When I went through I may have called home 4 or 5 times. Some flights had more liberty. It all depends on whether or not they screw up too badly. Everyone will pay for one bad apple.

I go to basic on Nov 1st. I would advise to getting in shape. You do have to be a certain weight and you do have to pass certain criteria, be it that it is the Air Force and is not as hard as say the Marines, it's still the military. As for phone calls, if i were you, I wouldn't worry about having much if any of a personal life during BMT.
Good Luck!! and ask your recruiter, they should have more information and they are there for a reason.
And pimp master(below) is incorrect, you do not get to bring your cell or ipod to basic. Like I said, it is the Airforce(easiest branch) but I would be that the majority of American's couldn't get through it. There is a big underestimate of what it is really like.
The Air Force upper hand is that we're not a bunch of idiots, we have brains.
mushin00 is wrong as well, the Marine PFA is not the same as the Air Force. Marines run 2mils PFA's, AF runs 1.5mile, and the Marines do pullups on the PFA, AF doesn't, Marines do crunches, not situps like the AF. That dude is incorrect and needs to do more research. Also, AF basic is 6.5weeks, not 8.5(which is a rumor).

When I joined in 1976 we got to call home once a week. If you are out of shape try jogging because to get out of BMT you have to do a run plus the confidence course. Don't worry about strength training and go for the cardiovascular type of training.

BMT in the AF is a cake walk, the only thing you will have to worry about is shaving, folding clothes, and cleaning. As far as I can remember we started to make phone calls and go to the patio around 3rd or 4th week ,but all you had was an hour. As for exercise start running, Push-ups , Crunches and pull ups. USAF AIR POWER! Get ready to scream that and sing the Air Force Song. Learn it ,live it, love it

Don't listen to some of these people. I was an Air Force brat and then was Army for 20 years myself. Seen both sides and you have made a wise choice, many of these people wouldn't qualify for Air Force. Nor a combat arm that requires smarts. Anyway, as far as PT, pushups, pushups, pushups! You use specific muscles for them so there is no substitute. Sit ups until you die and of course running is key. Other than that don't stress it to much as they will get you in shape. Now with phone calls........ you can make a few here and there but you will stand in line forever! Write letters on your down time and have others do so as well to you. A letter at mail call is worth more than a 3 minute call. Phoning is not really worth the time. You and your pals can go get some fast food, go to the library and email or go to a movie instead for a break in training. You will be done and be able to make all the phone calls you wish eventually. Good luck to you!

Matt, I don't know why so many people on here a joking with you about joining the Air Force? All branches of the service have Basic Training and none of them are easy. I would advise you to start a daily workout routine, jogging at first then running. You have about 4 months to get in shape. You do not want to go to AF basic out of shape, believe me. You will be doing stuff you don't normally do, and you will be hurting from all the exercise and training. Just start out slow. Thank you for making the decision to join the military.

once you're severe approximately turning out to be a member of, you should be a citizen. in case you enlist, you are able to artwork in direction of your citizenship, yet enlisted in the USAF are no longer pilots. As G pronounced, basically electorate could nicely be officers. you may run some searches on the cyber web for the right information. you are able to at last exchange your recommendations, and artwork to make your u . s . greater suitable- yet once you nevertheless could make u . s . of america your u . s . and connect the USAF, choose for it! i became an officer, and not a pilot, and nevertheless served honorably in the Air rigidity. remember that to be an Air rigidity pilot you may pass a rigorous actual examination- and characteristic sturdy eyesight. i became ruled out by way of fact i'm partly coloration-blind and failed the "dot-attempt" the place you're meant to confirm a selection in a circle of diverse colored dots... it regulations quite some adult males out who otherwise have the intelligence and reflexes. no remember what you come to a decision on doing, sturdy good fortune!

Obvisouly all these people are talking about something they know nothing about.
The AF has changed there ways. Our Physical Fitness is pretty close to what the Army is doing now. Why, because the Army cant get people in there service and they are calling on the AF to fulfill there missions. More and more Airman are getting called on to perform convoy duties over in the desert. With this we have to be in shape. Yes in the past we did not need to be in the greatest shape. Its not that there was anything wrong with that. We were below the Army and Marines when it came to fitness but we were above them when it came to brain power. Now we are catching up with fitness.
AF BMT will be a challenge if you walk in thinking it will be a cake walk you are going to walk into something you werent ready for. I would recommend you get into the shape to where you can just out atleast 70 push-ups and sit-ups and you can run the 2 mile in about 13 minutes. Yes this is more then the requirment but you will be ahead of the curve and it will make things a lot easier for you.
As for phone calls. I dont know how much it has changed since I came in back in 2001 but we made like a 15 sec call when we got there to let our family know that we made it there safe and then we got one more in like the 3rd week of training. You will also get base liberty in like your 5th or 6th week so you will be able to call home then also.
Its a good thing you are getting in now. The AF is about to change to a 9 week BMT just like the Army to allow us to get better combat training as we are starting to move to a more joint operation with the other branches.
I would also recommend you not use this site to ask questions as there are a lot of misunderstood people on here. Visit
www.afforums.com
This is a site of nothing but AF members and they will be able to answer question you have....I am a mod on the site, AFCP is my username.
Have a great day and good luck.
