I want to have something delivered to them on Christmas Eve, to let them know that we are thinking of them while we are away, that has some Caribbean flair. I was thinking a beautiful tropical floral arrangement, but several of the people are allergic. Any other ideas? Please include web sites so that I may place my order. Thanks!

Ok, based on the first answer I received, maybe I need to add more details. I want to arrange, in advance, for something to be delivered to my family, while I am in Puerto Rico. It doesn't have to be from Puerto Rico, just tropical in flair. It will be snowing where they'll be so it will be fun to receive something totally out of that element. I want ideas for something I could order now and schedule to be sent around Christmas time while we're away. I don't want to buy something for them there, and ship it, as it would never make it in time.

you could have sent fruit like mango's, pineapple, coconut, plantains, papayas.

or send over all the fixings for a Pina colada(it was invented on the island) dark Bacardi rum, coconut milk, pineapple juice,

a cd of puerto rican music.

good luck and have fun

It depends on what characteristic part of the Island you fall in love with. There's nothing truly authentic in San Juan or Condado, I traveled outside of the main areas of puerto rico to get a rich history of the culture.

When you shop for chachka's and souvenirs be weary of the vendors and the places they come from. A lot of it is made in DR, Brazil and hardly in PR. When I went I had to sift through items ie jewelry boxes, frames etc.. made from teak wood from brazil and as far as costa rica. The paintings came from DR/Haiti same difference cause they are made by Haitian Artists.

Make sure to travel to the outskirts of town and not fall into the trap of buying something touristy, no family memeber wants to be stuck with that. I bought a lot of mirros/ hand made frames and dresses when I went to puerto rico. Think about the gift and see if it would be something you would like sitting in your living room or the back of a closet.

I love the stuff they sell here, they have mask of "vejigantes" and other really nice art stuff. Enjoy Puerto Rico. I hope you get to see much more than San Juan.
