It's a writer of what is considered to be an at least slightly inferior kind of book. The book s/he writes is not good enough to be made into an expensive hard cover book, so the publisher publishes it as a cheaper soft cover, or paperback. Clear now? :-)

"Paperback Writer" is a song written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon and released by The Beatles on the A side of their eleventh single. It went to the number one spot in Britain, the United States, West Germany and Australia. This was the first Beatles single not to be a love song (however "Nowhere Man" was their first album song released with that distinction). On the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, "Paperback Writer"'s two-week stay at number one was interrupted by Frank Sinatra's "Strangers in the Night".

and a book not in a hard cover .

I tjust means that the author of the books only has books published in paperback (soft cover) books not the traditional hard cover books. Many romance novelists are paperback authors. The covers are a little thicker than paper but not as hard as card board like a box. Hope this answers your question.

No offense meant here buddy, but I didn't know there was anyone on the planet that didn't know what a paperback was.

It is a soft coverbook generally small enough to fit in the backpocket of a pair of jeans.

A paperback writer (as the Beatles sang) was someone who wrote a book later published as a paperback.

A paperback is the book industry's term for referring to a softcover book, usually fiction based.
So a paperback writer would be one who writes novels/stories which comes in that format.

A paper back book is a book with a soft cover as opposed to a book with a hard cover. You might have heard it in the old song paper back writer. Sometimes these are romances that were never in hard cover but a lot of times they are books that were hard cover and are now in soft cover. People are more likely to buy paper back books instead of hard back due to the price. One who writes the books initially set out as paper back books are called paper back writers.
