You are so sweet to comfort her like that, I am sure she really appreciates how supportive you are.

And you are absolutely right pets are like part of your family.I have a friend who can not have children and she considers her cats as her children. Because she rescued them and has been taking care of them since they were babys.

I believe that animals are like people too. And that they were sent into your life for a reason however long or short there stay may be.

We have 3 children, ages 13, 9 and 6. We adopted an 8 year old Chocolate Lab. This dog had never been around kids, yet she immediately became their best playmate. She takes turns sleeping in everyone's beds at night and is always up for a game of fetch - indoors or out. Labs have a reputation for being great family oriented dogs. As for breeds that wouldnt do well with kids, I can't say from experience, but I would hesitate to bring one of the stronger breeds into a family. (Rottweilers, Pitts, etc. - even though I HAVE heard from people that those breeds can make excellent family pets as well. )

Pets are definitely part of the family I have 2 cats and a dog. Out Dog a Black Lab is 13 years old and we got her at 8 weeks old, she is as much a fixture in our house as the kitchen sink, but obviously more loved. She is healthy, but we are dreading the day when she will eventually die. She is the sweetest most pitiful puppy in the world and I love her to Death.
The cats are what my mom refers to as her "grandchildren" since I have not had any kids yet the cats are the surrogate kids in the family. I have had both of them for 4 and 5 years respectively and they have just become a piece of the family, and of course like any member of the family you have good days and bad days. You go though happy times and sad times.
Anyone that says that their pet is just a piece of property ask them if they have a picture of their pet, they will most likely say yes. In turn ask them if they have a picture of their favourite coffee mug or screw driver, I'm sure not one of them will say yes. We take pictures of family.

That is true. Some people may not recognize that pets do have feelings and are part of a family. My dog, Canela, is 8 years old, and it is said that dogs can live up to 15 years. Almost every night I pray that she can at least live to 20 years. I still cannot imagine the day when I lose her, and try not to think of it. But I`m afraid the day will come someday, because every living being is born to die. But one thing is true and is exactly what you said, we will always have them forever in our hearts.

pets are a member of the family. Some people actually treat their pets better than they treat their kids. It does hurt to lose a family member!

This isn't really a question requiring an answer, but I wanted to comment that for many people pets ARE like a member of the family. I know I'm very attached to my cats and treat them like family members with the notable exception of their being exempt from chores. :) I'm sorry for your girlfriend's loss of her beloved cat.

Of course pets are members of the family. They are well loved sons, daughters, brothers, sisters . . .

When I was growing up we had a very charming wonderful male westie (dog) and he was my father's favourite son! >wink< We still mourn his passing, all of us and Scottie died almost 20 years ago.

I now have 4 cats, and I refer to them as my babies, or for the youngest two the "twins" hahaha

Oh yes pets are members of the family and we do mourn them . . .as we would any valued member of the family.

I wish you and your g/f all the best. You both sound like you have wonderful generous hearts that need to be filled with another "family member".

You are an exception to the rule for friend support, much less guy support. Most people don't understand losing a pet/best friend. How sweet of you to empathize and care for your girlfriend so much. Thanks, made my day, there are nice people out there. Purrs, Alda
