McDonald's is not just a franchised restaurant, it is THE franchised restaurant. Let`s assume your question is referring to the McDonald's empire. Many decades ago (1950`s I believe) a salesman for malt/shake machines walked into a restaurant and was amazed at how it operated. Two brothers had decided to make a restaurant that catered to people who had absolutely NO time to stop and wait for lunch to be prepared. The brothers created a simple menu with just a sandwich fries and a drink. It as fast easy and you usually had your order in less than a minute. As a small boy I remember walking into a newly opened
McDonald's that had a timer at the door. From the moment you walked in it was 60 seconds until you received your food or the order was free. Back to the story. This malt/shake machine salesman had an idea that this "fast food" concept was potentially very profitable. He talked to the 2 brothers Richard McDonald and Maurice McDonald. They took the McDonald's brothers concept and a malt/shake salesman`s (Ray Croc)ideas and melded them together to make the first restaurant franchise idea. Since then, McDonald's has held the record as the very most successful fast food franchise of all time. It is also the grandaddy of them all. You should hear the story of Kentucky Fried Chicken....it is even cooler.

Not Ronald MacDonald as many people think. He is just their Clown mascot.

Richard "Dick" J. McDonald (February 16, 1909 – July 14, 1998) and Maurice "Mac" McDonald (November 26, 1902 – December 1971) were two early American fast food pioneers, originally from Manchester, New Hampshire, who established the first McDonald's restaurant in 1940. The McDonald family were of Irish origin, not of Scottish origin, as sometimes stated (McDonald is an extremely common name in both countries). However this has come under scrutiny with recent genealogy showing the family originated from Glencoe, Scotland. This was brought to light when McDonald's refused to put menus in Scottish Gaelic, locals argued this was the McDonald ancestral home and not putting menus in gaelic was an insult to the brothers' heritage.

The business was founded in 1940 with a restaurant opened by siblings Dick and Mac McDonald. It was their introduction of the "Speedee Service System" in 1948 that established the principles of the fast-food restaurant. However, the company today dates its "founding" to the opening of CEO Ray Kroc's first franchised restaurant, the company's ninth, in 1955. He opened his first McDonald's in Des Plaines, Illinois in April 1955.
