Samson is one of the most legendary figures in the Bible, famous for his great strength which left him when he got a much needed haircut. (He is also portrayed in the Bible as arrogant, bad-tempered, and easily led by women of questionable character, but these things rarely receive attention.) His strength is never portrayed as being natural; instead, it usually comes upon him when the "spirit of God" came into him at just the right time.

I've read the account in Judges--Samson was a Nazarite, sworn to God by his parents from the moment of his birth, which explains the fact that "a razor never touched his head." Samson's naive confession to Delilah is the first indication that this is where his strength lay, but of course the point is that it actually lay with God. My question, though, is was Samson's strength a physical part of him, or did it appear only when he needed it?

I can't say for sure but it is born out in the Biblical narrative that Samson's strength was not so much in his hair as in his relationship with God. The reason he lost his strength when his hair was cut was not so much because of the loss of his hair as that by losing his hair he broke faith with his God.

I read somewhere that if you look at the life of Jesus and the life of Samson, then look at the paintings and such made of them. The reality would probably be reversed. Samson's strength was spiritual, so there is no reason to believe he was anything more physically than a pampered and primped Noble. Meanwhile Jesus was a carpenters son and until he assumed his ministry worked in one of the most physically demanding jobs of his time. Thus it is more likely that Jesus was a big muscular fellow while Samson could very well have been the pretty little effeminate one.

Makes you think?

It was a physical part of him. This is interesting because people ask all the time about Jesus' long hair when the style for men at that time was fairly short. The Nazarite vow--comes into play here too.

I think that Samson was an idiot, and I'm sick of Delilah getting a bad rap. He brought the situation upon himself. There are two lessons to be learned from this story: don't sleep with the enemy and don't think with the wrong head.

Don't touch the hair dude.

Samson's strength came from God he was physically strong but his UN human strength came from the Spirit of God as you see he recovered it after his bad haircut

the point is that his strength comes from God, which the Nazarite vow not to cut their hair was a symbol of

I do not think that Samson looked like a body builder, but just an average man.

It seams like he was not always strong, but that strenght was always there when he needed it.

it seems it was given by God for the good of the people and not just for himself, and that he would have possessed it as long as he remained loyal to God.
