If 2 people came into a hospital with the same metal rod between both their abdomens connecting them, one of them is female in her 50's with a family and the other is male in his 20's single, and the doctor after analyzing the situation realizes they both have a chance to live but only one of them can live because when they take the first person off the rod he or she will bleed to death because they will not have enough time to get to both so the second person will live. Which person do you think should live?

The point of the question is choosing which one should live. It is impossible for both to live.

The mother, who will probably become a grandmother as well, and will help her children raise their own.
The young man will probably just impregnate a lot of teenage girls, and then bugger off, and simply be a lousy father.
(I'm a feminist if you haven't guessed)

For you "Star Trek" fans, this seems to be a classic "Kobishi Marue" situation, and like Kirk, I don't believe in the no win scenario.
Get the firefighters with the "jaws of life" over there stat and cut the rod. Barring that, call the maintenance guy and ask to borrow his hacksaw. Now you will be able to work on them separately. Hopefully there will be enough staff so that you can have a team for each. If not, start with the one who is in the most immediate danger. They both may or may not live, but at least they would be given equal opportunity!

Wasn't this in Grey's anatomy or E.R? I think the one that has the best chance of survival should be given the opportunity. But you are assuming that there is no chance that they both can survive, why are there not enough Doctors, Nurses and equipment to work on both at the same time?

I'd just call in a second OR team, split them apart with a Fire Dept chopsaw, and have each team get busy on one of the victims. Chances are, both would live. Decisions like that are best left to God.

I would put them both in the same operating room. Cut the rod in half, then have another surgeon ready and work on both, thus saving both lives.

I think the two stuck with the rod should decide which one of them should live.

The youngest as they have not lived their life as yet. Not to the extent that the other has. Myself I would say save the other if I were one of those two.

first off,can anyone tell me wat the odds r of that EVER happening?:P
u didnt mention wether they were concious or not,im assuming u meant they werent but im also going to tell u wat shoudl happen if they were concious. If they were then the doctor should sit down and have a talk with both of them,it is their lives at stake, they should decide.
if they are unconcious then id gather as much information on them, decide which one was a better human being and save that person.

I agree,
either ask the two themselves who should live, or try to save both even if it means loosing both. Life is importaint no matter what.
