Light kills beer, which is why most bottled beer is sold in dark brown bottles. It artificially ages the beer (extremely rapididly I might add), and notice how Corona is sold in a CLEAR bottle!
Coronas are skunked by the time they get to your grocer because of this. Meaning, there is a foul underlying flavor that is not supposed to be there. The lime was a marketing ploy to sell the Corona to Americans w/o having to actually make a better beer.
Do this experiment, get Miller Lite, Bud, and Corona together. Drink each one with a lime. Notice how they are all identical?
If you want a great Mexican beer, try Dos Equis Amber or ***** Modello. The Modello being my favorite.

Many have the opinions that it is unique to the way of consuming this popular brand of Mexican beer. Incidentally, this practice is uncommon among the locals in its native Mexico. Rather, it is usually seen among the tourists there, and in the export markets.
Plausible background behind the practice of inserting the lime wedge into the bottle neck range from it being a cleaner of rust stains around the bottle mouth (due to an early practice of metal caps without the rubber liner/seal); to it being used to keep the flies away (probably by the early tourist drinkers).
Another contender for the inspiration of the practice could perhaps be the Michelada, a popular beer cocktail made with the addition of lime juice and hot sauces. Though in this light, perhaps Corona with a lime wedge might actually be considered a sort of semi-cocktail? Your call !!

It's a common misconception that the lime is used to mask the taste, now it is just clever marketing. Originally, as posted above, it was used to stop the flies getting in. In the hot Mexican weather, flies are abundant. When not drinking the beer, the locals put half a lime (they grow very small in Mexico) in the top, by the time they need to take another drink the lime is usually covered so they discard the lime and put a new lime in.

You wipe the top of the bottle and sprinkle salt on it so it tastes better. Then you push the rest of the lime wedge into the beer. The lime is supposed to keep the flies from getting into the bottle or landing on it. If you want to try a good Mexican beer, try Modelo or Negra modelo (Dark beer). Also, Bohemia and Carta Blanca are very good as well. Hardly anyone really drinks Corona in Mexico. It's more of a trendy beer here in the States.
