My 13 month old has been throwing up and having diarreha for 3 days now and i took him to the doc, they said it was the stomach flu!!! They told me to put him on the BRATS diet and hydrate him well, but he will not drink anything at all other than milk and it makes his throwing up worse!!! I have tried every clear liquid i can think of!!! I do not know what to do!!! I have tried everything the doc has suggested !!!! Any suggestions???

It seems that you have three choices and you need to make one now, RIGHT NOW.
Dehydration and diarrhea in children can become very dangerous problems. And, since he does not seem to be getting better, but worse, something has to be done now.
Some suggestions:
1--I don't know if you've called your doctor back yet to report that he's not getting better or not. If not, you should call and see what s/he says. If the doctor or his/her nurse or PA still thinks it's just a stomach flu and does not take the situation more seriously, then go through steps 2 or 3 below. Then when everything's calmed down and your child is better, get rid of this doctor!
2--Take him to the hospital emergency room. I suspect that they will take a much closer look at his problems and symptoms. They will do more tests, especially since it sounds like the doctor you took him to may not have done any.
3--Take him to an urgent care center--a step just below the emergency room and perhapsp a step just above your doctor.
Good luck. Please follow up on this now.

Since he will drink milk, try mixing SOY milk half and half with Pedialite. The milk is probably soothing to his stomach and takes away the hunger pang. If he will drink this, lower the milk ratio until gradually he's drinking mostly Pedialite. Don't try to stop the vomiting or diarrhea, it's the body's way of getting rid of the irritant. Let him have one plain cracker every once in a while if he will take it. The more he will eat or drink, the quicker his body will get rid of the irritant.
As long as he has diarrhea and wet diapers, he's not dehydrated. Keep an eye on how much he urinates, that is the best indicator hydration.

There is a medicine that they can give that will instantly stop the throwing up. Diarreha is necessary to get the virus out.
Ask doctor for it. They use this medicine on children taking chemo to stop their nausea. After my doctor said no, the children's hospital emergency room gave it to my 3 year old in the triage center before even seeing a doctor. Stopped the vomiting instantly! The prescription for a few doses was about $50, that is why most doctors won't write it up. I wish I knew the name, but it is at home. It has two syllables-that is all I remember. Good luck.

Stay clear of the milk! Any dairy will just further upset the little guys system. Offer him other liquids and if he refuses just keep offering but don't force him to drink, when he is very thirsty he'll take the beverage. Also try Popsicles (with little or no sugar) my girls love Popsicles when they've been sick. Also if he is still waking up with wet diapers don't be too worried, just keep an eye on him and keep in contact with the doctor

Do not give a sick child milk/dairy products!!!! Take this kid to the ER where he/she can be given an IV for fluids for dehydration and phenegran for the vommitting. I have 4 kids, and one did this often..throw up..no diarrhea. Once, she used all the sugar from her liver lying in the waiting room around the age of your child. She passed out!!!! Our pedi did me the same telling me to give her a quarter ounce every hour. The baby is thirsty and doesn't understand that or that food and water will make them sicker.
Do try popsicles and lollipops.

I agree with the Pedialites Popsicles suggestion (pure genius invention!). Also, don't listen to Ankesh Sharma, he said breastfeeding was essential, and most modern mothers don't breastfeed this far into the child's life. If you still are though, by all means do it.
And since the doctor won't take it seriously, go to the emergency room. At the least, they'll put him on an IV drip so he can rehydrate, and probably do some bloodwork, which is hard to watch (and listen to) in a child so young, but is absolutely necessary.

Try some pedialyte pops, or the drink. If you have done that already, I would just take him back to the dr to make sure he is not dehydrated really bad.

Keep track of how much is going in versus how much is going out (urine and vomit)
If he stops peeing like he normally does take him to the emergency room right away.
If he is keeping absolutely nothing down, take him in.
Is he acting normally? Is he drowsy, "spaced out" if he is take him in right away.
Dehydration can happen very quickly. He may need iv anti-nausea meds and re-hydration.
Good luck, hope your little one is feeling better soon.
(Some of my friends have had luck with the pedia-lite popsicles but my son wouldn't touch them. He had only one day of the diarrhea and vomiting and doctor said he was severely dehydrated.)

I'm not a Dr, but I am a mum and I would take my baby back to the Dr for a second opinion if she was still ill after three days.
As for keeping up his hydration, have you tried him with an ice lolly?
Hope he is better soon.

Where you said he is not dyhydrated yet. My suggestion is to spoon it in if you have to. Anything to keep ;him from being dyhydrated. You dont want him to end up in the hospital. One sure sign he is dyhydrated is if he is just lying there, not playing at all like normal. Even if he wonders off to play for a few minutes this is a good sign. Mine went through this and to see a baby straped to a table while they put an iv in breaks your heart. So as I said spoon it in, try the pops any pops. Good luck and god bless.
