My friend just called me, she is supposed to be a week or so behind me(I am 9 weeks), she went for her first ultrasound and there was a sac but no baby and she has to have a D&C. What does that mean and what causes it? Thanks so much.

It's a genetic problem, also called hydatid mole i think, or blighted ovum, where the zygote just keeps on dividing instead of developing into an embryo. It looks like a cluster of tiny yellow grapes in an amniotic sac, and it means that the baby never developed beyond what he/she was a few days after conception.

Sometimes a pregnancy will start and a sac will form. For some reason or another (maybe birth defects). The new fetus will die leaving just the empty sac behind. This happened to me, pregnancy test says you are pregnant (but hormone levels are very low) but there is no baby and if the sac and uterine lining don't come out on their own, you need to have a D&C. This apparently happens quite often and doesn't mean she won't have a successfull pregnancy next time.

Good luck to her, give her some support because even though there was "no baby" she certainly thought there was and will be in mourning for this lost child.

It means that she miscarried the baby but the sac is still there and it has to be removed - that is why they do the D&C and it is normally very painful unfortunately. The cause of losing the baby could be a number of things. Without knowing the person and her behaviors/habits it is really hard to say.

Its called a blighted ovum...sperm and egg met but did not develop. I had the same thing. Its a miscarriage...you can either wait for it to pass or you can have a d&c...I opted for a d&c to be sure that it was all cleaned out. Google blighted ovum online, and it will give you more information. You can try again after a mentrual cycle passes. It by no means means that you can't have a normal pregnancy after...I did.

She has what's called a blighted ovum. The embryo stopped developing very early in the pregnancy for some reason.

I am very sorry for your friend's loss.

the baby was not in the sac... she will have to have the sac removed from her uterus so she will not get a infection
