I would ask the breeder what they have been feeding and how much. It's not a good idea to switch foods, especially with a pup. Congrats!

For the beginning, your breeder should be able to tell you what kind of food they used and portioning. After that, the food you use will have a chart on it as a guide for how much to feed on a daily basis. You should ask your vet too, as this is just a guide and tho works well for most breeds, some require a little more or a little less. We have a Border Collie puppy and that's a very active breed, so our vet suggested giving more feeding amount than the bag specified. Depending on your dog breed, your vet should do the same.

As for times of feeding, we feed twice a day with adult dogs, but with young puppies, we started out with 4 feedings a day. Then worked it down to 3 after a few weeks (by the time the puppy is 12 weeks old) and then once the puppy reached 4 months, the vet said our puppy could do 2 feedings a day just fine. They're alot like a human baby when they're really young... they need to eat frequently in smaller portions until they grow a bit.

It depends on the size, breed, and age of the pup,but a small breed of dog doesn't eat as much as a larger breed of pup.Ask the breeder,or owner what type of food the pup is on,as it isn't a good idea to change its' food, because of stomach upset. If you wish to put it on a different brand than what it has been eating, then change it gradually by adding a small amount of the chosen brand to the other food it is on,and each feeding decrease the older brand and increase the brand chosen.Soon your pet will be consuming the full amount of the chosen brand and this will keep your pet from getting stomach upset. Also if it is a young pup just weaned, you may have to soak dry kibbles in warm water til softened, then add a small amount of a good brand of Canned puppy food, they like it this way. After it gets old enough to chew kibbles, you can start giving it just the dry.I like the Iams Puppy dry formula, most puppies love this .A small pup needs to be fed at least 3 times a day if just weaned, then when older drop down to 2 times a day.Goodluck with your new baby.

Where are you getting the puppy from?

If you are getting him from a shelter then they can tell you what they've been feeding him and they should give you a booklet on how to care for your puppy.

If you're getting him from a private person, then when you take your puppy to the vet (very soon after adopting him), the vet will tell you all you need to know about feeding him.

One note. Dogs are different than cats. Cats you can change their food at the drop of a hat without anything happening. You can't do that with dogs. Dogs need to be gradually changed from one food to another. So it's best to feed the puppy what he's been eating whereever he's been, then gradually change him over. A vet can tell you all you need to know.

Good Luck.

The best feeedding advice will come from someone in your veterinary hospital. Either the doctor or some facilities have techs who are certified dieticians. One of the top foods in my opinion is put out by a company called Hill's. When purchasing food, take into the acoount the size of your dog..If you have a large breed puppy, be sure to buy a food designed for large breeds. The label on the bag should say if it is or not. The difference between this and other foods is that the large breed foods contain ingedients that will prevent long term problems such as joint and long bone diseases.

you will need to feed it the same as it is currently being fed - so talk to the breeder or shelter you are getting it from.. (NEVER NEVER get pups from pet stores or puppy brokers you will pay too much for a low quality animal and will be supporting a cruel industry called puppy mills)

so find out what kind of food its on, most breeders will supply you with a small bag of food... if the food isnt good or isnt available where you live you can slowly switch to something else but allow the pup to adjust to your home first

smaller breed pups need food 5 times a day.. larger and medium breeds can be fed 3 times a day, cutting down to 2 times a day at about 3 months...

always use STAINLESS STEEL bowls or ceramic.. NEVER use plastic

It depends on the size of the puppy, obviously get young dog food. You should ask someone in a pet shop, they will know what you need exactly.
