*Time management. Being able to turn in assigments on time and allocating enough of it to DO the reading and homework is essential.

*Being driven/focused. Not allowing external issues/drama throw you off track and focused on your studies.

*Having a life OUTSIDE student life. I think it is essential as well...being able to hang out with friends...do volunteer work...maybe having a parttime job. All these allow a student to partake in life separate from schoolwork. It can be therapeutic...a release from the everyday routine of books, classes, assignments and tests. It can give a student an opportunity to sample adult life--money management (w/a job), more responsibility (being timely in arriving to work)--and yet another opportunity to reinforce the issues I just mentioned above.

*The most essential of all...having confidence is one's abilities...knowing shortcomings and working to improve areas where one feels they may be deficient. In other words...knowing what your strengths and weaknesses are. Work on areas that you are not great in...stay proficient in areas you are strong in...and have confidence in all your abilities.

Without any confidence, a student is likely to fall beneath the cracks.

I know it's a lot, but this is just my .02.

I think the foundation of success is being honest with yourself. Know what your strengths and weaknesses are so you know how to adapt your study techniques. Know what you are willing to sacrifice (i.e., time, partying, TV) and what you can't live without. Know what you can really achieve (maybe your best is a B not an A). I have found that students who have unrealistic goals or ideals are the ones who have a hard time adjusting. I teach a student development class and this is what I try to teach them. Once you can be honest with yourself you can achieve great things because you know how to adjust and prepare for challenges.

Creative and critical thinking... Knowing what to study instead of studying everything... You get 80% of your grade from the part for which you spend 20% of your total study time.
