I can kind of see what that book is getting at, but at the same time I have prayed each day right after I got saved for the Lord to take my smoking from me, and it was 6 months later God did. So I say if you have a burden that you wish to overcome then keep praying cause God hears ya.

Matthew 6 states that you should keep your problems out of your prayers. Doesn't an omniscient god already know what your problems are?
6:7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
6:8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
And so on and so forth

You should not just pray the same thing over and over in repitition, however, if you have a problem and it is on your mind it is OK to go to God with it more than once! Jesus went to God three times asking if it was His will, to take away the bitter cup. If Jesus prayed three times about His burden, we can too!
What you are doing is fine, you are having a relationship with God.
Here are good steps for prayer:
1. Confess your sins
2. Praise God for Who He is
3. Thank God for what He has done
4. Ask or petition God for your needs
5. Always pray in Jesus name
God does know our needs, but He wants us to pray to Him, it is the relationship that He desires and is also good for us!

I don't know where that person got that information that God only wants to hear one of your problems at a time. If he can run the whole universe, I think He can handle hearing all of your problems when you pray. lol Keep doing what you're doing and trust Him! He will take care of all your problems in time. Sometimes He doesn't take care of them the way WE planned but His way is always best.

This is what Jesus taught:
Luke 18:1 Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart, 2 saying, "In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect man. 3 "There was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, `Give me legal protection from my opponent.' 4 "For a while he was unwilling; but afterward he said to himself, `Even though I do not fear God nor respect man, 5 yet because this widow bothers me, I will give her legal protection, otherwise by continually coming she will wear me out.' " 6 And the Lord said, "Hear what the unrighteous judge said; 7 now, will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them?

there's nothing wrong in telling God your prayers, only that you should pray with faith. Trust that God will answer your prayers in good time. sometimes it may seem that the things we want most are not always the best for us. The best judge is God.

Keep asking and it will be answered, keep knocking and it will be opened, The apostle Paul said to pray incessantly. Beseach the Lord thy God. The point is talk to God as a child to a loving father. Thank him for all he provides for you and ask for his help. Just as a child would ask for help. Keep asking to let God know that it has not been resolved. But work along with your prayers to get it resolved.
It is not wrong to keep praying about a matter that is worrying you.

If you read the bible, you should not pray for things. Prayer is meant to give praise, not ask for help, rewards or anything else. jesus stated that god already knows what you need, and your desires. You are wrong to ask for specifics. The bible says, use the lords prayer. And, in private.

It's never wrong to have a conversation with God. He wants to know how we're feeling - not to mention as we put our feelings into words can be very healing in and of itself.
Don't worry about it - just keep talking to Him.
