The inmates are there because of suspicion of attempting to murder people. I agree that some are treated badly by our standards, but i am sure they are glad they are where they are and not in any other prison run by another country. During the civil war President Lincoln suspended the Writ of Habeas corpus on eight seperate occasions, banning prisoners the right to see a judge who decides wether or not the prisoner is being held unlawfuly and wether or not he or she should be realeased. Look at what we did to Japenese americans during wwII.Sometimes we have to bend the laws that protect us and the very laws that define us to protect the nation.

If they are eager to learn on their own then good for them. I can understand why everyone wants a non-english speaking person to learn the english language. For you and me it is something we were taught from birth but for those who come here from another country be it a Central American country or a country overseas, english is a very difficult language to speak, read and write. We have so many different meanings for the same word, words that sound alike but spelled differently, and so on and so forth. You can teach the basics but not in two weeks. If they don't learn it in 2 weeks what will he do then bring out the cattle prods? To me that article is a way for him to get noticed.
That is just my opinion.

Yes we need to have the facts.. the inmates wear pink underwear to prevent theft..
ARPAIO: They were stealing the white underwear several years ago, smuggling it out of the jail. So I dyed the underwear pink because they hate pink, especially in this county they hate pink. Why give them a color they like?
Joe is a grandstanding, publicity hog.. his rate of recidivism is no better than any other sheriff.

I saw this on TV - I think each & every city in the US & it's territories should do the same thing...only maybe more! Rid our country of all illegal immigrants...they are killing middle-class America with the help of both political parties! The have NO positive impact on the USA!

Treat inmates in what way? I read the article. I think teaching them to speak english is what should happen. If you're in the US, speak the language. Why be here if you dont' want to be apart of it? Please. And if you were referring to wearing pink underware, I'm sure that's not as bad as the crime they did to be put in jail to begin with.

Sheriff Joe is an institution in Phoenix. He also is very very popular in Arizona. At least my states doing something about the problem. Is yours. He also has won the so called "civil rights" cases filed against him
I love him hes great,he was on Lou Dobbs the other night and was fantastic.Hes a very hard man but hes good.
He doesn't need to get noticed hes been doing things like this for 10 years at least and he knows law enforcement .
He puts every one on the chain gang not because they don't speak English, its AZ law that he can.Even women prisoners have their own chain gangs,The pink underwear was because some inmate put some dye in the wash and it turned all the under ware pink,so to save money Joe didn't buy new under ware he made them wear the now pink under ware. Now its a collectors item.Know your facts before you speak please.

That shows you how people are starting to feel about immigrants that sneak in to this country. If the government doesn't get the problem under control, the people will do it.

Good for the warden. They are prisoners and wards of the state. Let it be a bad place for them so they do not want to come back.

Apparently there isn't a law saying they can't, nor people doing something about it. Look at the answers saying nothing's wrong here.
It is one thing to "help" people learn to speak English, it is unacceptable to make them wear pink underwear and be on a "chain gang" for their inability.
Some weirdo might have "the nerve" to do or say something ridiculous, it is up to other citizens to stand up and say it isn't ok. When that isn't happening in a case like this (and many others), the question shouldn't be "Can you believe the nerve of some people?" Rather, it should be, "Can you believe the apathy in our culture?"
You read the article, why don't you DO something about it?

I love Arpaio. EVERY TOWN SHOULD DO THIS. You want to be here so badly? The least these leeches can do is to learn the language of our country. If you don't like it, get the hell out!
