It seems like since we have to work so hard to acheive these traits, they must be unnatural.

Yes it is unnatural. Babies don't suppress anything. That behavior is learned, which does make it unnatural.

That doesn't mean it's always bad, though.

There has to be a balance between the two. You see, some desires are not the ones to act out, they are not socially accepted. We all need to be tolerant, or show tolerance of some behavior or situations, but we cant tolerate ourselves to death.

We tolerated Hitler for almost 10 years before we had to take action. We tolerate some actions that, we know up front, will sooner or later go beyond what is acceptable and reasonable.

Again, we have to have a good balance between the two. Each person has their own way of doing this.

To 'outsider' groups yes it is indeed unnatural and we have to work hard at doing so. Its a bit like Mathematics and science, all very unnatural but part of what it now means to be human.

To an extent it is unnatural. Most religous groups label some of these as sins, not because they are bad. Rather they label them as sin, to teach restraint. Sex is a natural act. Nothing wrong with it. There is also nothing wrong with restraining ones self from practicing it. So if your religion belives its a sin, that does not make it bad. It only means, they belive in teaching control of ones self. Neither bad, nor good. Just one way to do things.

Neither is unnatural. As we experience life, we learn to suppress acting out on our desires. That learning is natural. It is also natural to practice tolerance. It is also natural to be intolerant. As we experience life, we learn what to be tolerant and intolerant of. Sometimes we learn badly and are intolerant of things we should be tolerant of, and vice versa.

The only desires that need to be suppressed are the intolerant ones.
