"Chicken" refers to both males and females of the species. "Roosters" are male chickens and "Hens" are female chickens.
So in answer to your question chickens are both roosters and hens.

Chickens are in Latin Gallus gallus domesticus. They are supposedly decendents from the Red Jungle fowl of Asia.
Male Chickens are called Roosters or Cocks,, Cockerals if they are younger. Females are called Hens,or chooks. A Pullet is a Young female.
Chickens are flock birds, and YES they can fly! Only for short distances, like over fences etc... Bu tthey can fly.. Most Free range farmers clip one wing to prevent flight.
You should also know Roosters can crow anytime.. its more of a response to show dominance or territory or to being startled to a sudden event... but they crow whenever they want not just at sunrise!

Now the real question to answer is..
What came first the chicken or the egg?
Or
If a rooster lays an egg on the peak of a barn roof,right up on the top of it.....which way will it roll?
