The only authority is God and we have been given just a power of attorney.
Moreover the earthly authority demands respect and it doesnt always earn respect.
Therefore whatever respect we have to give to the authority is becoz it demands us to do so.
An authority however may some time earn respect only after some action fruitful to the society

I think it depends on the age, situation, and personality of the individual.
Until you are 18 it is kind of unavoidable. But at the same time if there wasn't there probably be alot more problems. After you are 18 you are an adult and you can do as you like. I am 30 and i don't like authority either that is why i run my own business and work for myself. But even still really my customers are my boss. if they don't buy from me i don't make any money. So technically i believe it is not very avoidable. But it can be lessened depending on the situation.
That is why they say be your own man and be your own boss that way all the effects of the decisions you have made can only come back to you.........be them good or bad.
But with out some type of authority in early life i think it is harder to make some of those good decisions!!!

i view authority for what it is. Authority. simple.
it still has the same meaning, but people dont care about its meaning anymore. people dont respect authority. good or bad, it doesnt matter. were in a time of great rebellion.
Jesus said submit to those who are in authority to you. People dont even submit to there Boss at work half the time, just because they dont like the way they were instructed. even though they are paid to follow there bosses/managers orders, they either wont, or will do it with a bad attitude. there is no respect or reverence for authority anymore. and the way policemen are treated? my goodness. no wonder the world is going downhill.
even in the church. the congregation, or helpers/co-leaders have issues submitting to leadership for ridiculous reasons. they might not like the way something is being done, or they might not like the way they were spoken to and they take offense. well, God put those people in authority. His word says so. so either submit with a good attitude, or find a church where you might actually respect authority.
the reason im so blunt with this is because i used to have a problem with all and any authority, good or bad, it didnt matter, i just hated authority. what an absolute fool i was. im glad i woke up to it. im praying that others were too. Not understanding authority and not submitting to it is such a blessing blocker.

I think over the last 10 to 20 years there has been an increasing separation between "authority" and "respect". That is people who are in a position of authority can no longer simply command the respect of those people they have authority over.

Because of authority itself? Absolutely not. Respect is earned by the wise exercise of authority.
General Douglas MacArthur was constantly at odds with Truman, and publicly and vocally opposed him many times. One time they met, Truman was reported to have said something to the effect of, "General MacArthur, I don't give a d@mn what you think about Harry S. Truman, but you WILL respect the Office of the President."
The authority itself can be respected, but an authority is useless without someone weilding it. If the person weilding it deserves it, the person will have my respect. If they weild it stupidly, I'll tell them so, to their face, I'll lose all my respect for the person -- but I'll still respect the authority itself.
If George W. Bush told me to do something, I'd flip him the bird. If the President told me to do something, I'd seriously consider doing it.

My first reaction to the word is negative. I associate it with parental authority, which I despise. I don't know what it meant back then. No, authority doesn't equal respect. Courtesy should be extended to all, but respect should be earned. At most, someone in authority (like cops) might get subservience, which is fear based.

In the past, authority has been assigned to fathers, teachers and kings.
Nowadays, it is passed on to the popularly elected institutions.
I myself love and respect all human beings, not because of authority, but because of their inherent spiritual qualities.

When authority is corrupt and only interested in furthering it's own ambitions then I have a problem. Otherwise I'm fine with it.
