At least in America it is.
I've noticed that most people that I know, that go to church, know considerably less about the bible than I do.
What does that tell me?
They don't really practice their religion. They practice "going to church".
Think about that. Americans today, by and large, simply "go to church"
They do this in much the same way as they go to the grocery store. It's simply ingrained in them. They don't really study their bible. They don't really know their bible. And they don't want to.
They just want to go to church, which is basically a big social club, put in their time, compare clothes with each other, and go home and back to their lives again. (And these people really have a problem I think.) Just like smokers feel that it's normal to smoke, church-goers feel it's normal to believe in god.
Even though it's insane, and clearly false, they've done it all their lives, it's the "normal" thing to do, and the falsehood is backed up by loads of propoganda and enticements to make it more attractive.
So, yes... social conformity. I think that's why so many atheists/agnostics started out as non-comformists to begin with. Non-comformity leads to truth-seeking. And the truth about religion is blatantly obvious to anyone that takes away their bias.

Social conformity? That is what you're doing. Being a Christian can often mean you are the one who is NOT conforming. And how is it abandoning reason? I've studied enough science, there is evidence all around you my friend. I used to be just like you until I studied the evidence myself. Most of the time, athieists are uneducated about science and history. You only know what you have been told...I admit some Christians are this way also, but I am not one of them. You must study and look at the evidence in an unbiased way. Then come to your conclusion. God will show Himself to you. It took me two years to see the truth.

Poor lil piggy.
As brought out in the Bible, "faith is the substantiating of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."
Heb 11:1 Now faith is the substantiating of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
I'd like to say, the true christian religion does not conform to society. That is one reason they are hated by society, (the world).
Mat 24:9 Then shall they deliver you up to tribulation, and shall kill you; and ye will be hated of all the nations for my name's sake.
Joh 17:14 I have given them thy word, and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, as I am not of the world.

I don't think so. There are social benefits to conforming and to belonging to a religion, but I don't believe it's the driving factor. I think it would be more like icing than a cake layer.

No. Religious faith is the abandonment of society to conform with God.

Be clear about what you're asking: are you asking is it ok to have your own opinion while accepting others? or is it 'faith' or 'not adding your 2-cents worth' to someone else' opinion the only way that passes God's approval?
God is never opinionated, but then again, everything that He said is true. You make your own judgment call.

I think it's motivated more by self interest than social conformity. It's nice to believe you are saved but for some of us it's hard to swallow such fantasies.

No! Faith is believing in what you can not prove. It is trusting in God despite criticism, rebuke, and social nonacceptance.
