i had this problem when i was in college because i walked to school everyday, atleast 5 miles round trip...i went to my doctor and because i was walking so hard and so fast, i had shin splints, little cracks in my shins...oh boy did they hurt..i was a broke college student and couldnt afford physical therapy or nice meds to make me feel better...so, i would wrap my shin, fairly tightly with bandages everyday, it helped the pain because of the pressure on the shins...i stretched my legs everyday not only before walking, before bed too and i took ibuprofen...

Warming up and stretching is part of it. I run and I squat down with my feet together and lean a bit forward to feel the stretch of my shins and then hold it for about 20 seconds about 5 times. Your shoes may be another issue. If you can, find a store with knowledgable staff that actually will watch you run to see how you carry yourself when running - how your knees, ankles and feet move. I did this and my knee pain (a sure sign of needing new shoes) disappeared. Ask if you can return them if they don't run right for you. I had to take back a pair of Brooks after 3 runs and got Sauconys which have worked fine. Good Luck!

Sounds like shin splints to me. I used to get them when I ran cross country in HS. It is a shooting pain up my legs whenever I would run. They were pretty standard (many of my team mates had them as well) and my coach used to say we were running with poor support in the heel of our shoes. I don't know if that was true or not. I iced them down and took a week or 2 to rest and they got better.

Look it up on one of the medical sites for some advice before you follow-up with your doctor.

There is connective tissue between the muscle and the shin. This tissue can tear from the bone or muscle and create pain that will not respond to normal treatments. Clearly, rest is the only treatment; however, do not discount the beneficial effects of ice and massage. I suspect you are not taking enough rest days in your routine. Most people try to hard to "get back into shape". Rest days are essential to every runner. Rest, ice, and massage are just as important to me as the miles I run.

Try running more on your toes than your heels. It sounds likd "shin splints" which are caused by the impact of your heels on the ground.
