The Trinity can also be called the "Godhead". It is the 3 main Persons of God. It is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. All 3 are God and no part is greater than the other.(Holy Spirit is God: Acts 5:3-4, 2 Cor. 3:18 / Jesus is God: John 1:1,14,17-18 / God the Father is God: He is mostly in the old testament and Jesus called Him "Father") All 3 are equal (Matt. 28:18-20). The word "trinity" or "Godhead" is not in the bible, but the bible clearly shows that God has 3 distinct Persons.
Proof of the trinity in the Bible
1) Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
The word "God" in this text is Elohim(spelling?) in Hebrew which is God plural.
2) Genesis 1:26 "Then God[Elohim] said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness..."
Genesis 3:22 "And the LORD God said, 'The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil...
Genesis 11:7 "Come, let us go down..."
3) The trinity consists of God the Father, God the Son(Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit.
-God the Father
Matthew 5:48 "Be perfect, therefore as your heavenly Father is perfect.
-God the Son(Jesus/Immanuel)
Isaiah 7:14 "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel."
"Immanuel" means "God with us"
This was fullfilled in Matthew 1:22-23
-God the Holy Spirit
Genesis 1:2 "Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
4)All Three at the same time can be found in this passage:
Read Matthew 3:13-17
Matt. 3:16-17 "As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice[God the Father] from heaven said, 'This is my Son[Jesus], whom I love; with him I am well pleased.'"

There are many ways to describe and explain the Trinity. One is that the face of God is different from different angles. That 1. The Holy Spirit is not knowable as a person but as an omnipresent force. 2. The Father has given us and everything life and 3. The Son has come among us as a man, and like all men is connected to us. He has seen the colors we see, tasted the food we taste, suffered the constraints of society and the limits of physical strength and vigor. All of the faces of God together are invested in the evolution and spiritual growth of each person and of the human race.
Christianity has many facets and sects that differ from each other. Other faiths and Christianity differ from each other in many ways according to the separate faiths. For example, some Christians believe in reincarnation, many do not. Some believe in predestination, many don't. Predestination involves free will and the destiny of each individual and the grand plan.
Christianity, generally, does not subscribe to the notion that the poverty and pain of some individuals can be explained by evil that they did in past lives. It does not excuse murder and torture in the name of faith. Although centuries ago there wear many instances of this, crusades and inquisitions are things of the past.

The trinity doctrine is man-made and it had it's beginning in ancient Babylon, The Babylonians did not worship the one true God, but triads of gods, shown in historical pictures having three heads.
People should consider what the Bible really teaches about the identity of God and his Son and God's active force or power.
Here is something to think about also:
Jesus was dead for the better part of three days. If Jesus is God and was dead for that long--then who was ruling in heaven all that time? If the holy spirit is also God, then it was dead too. So there would have been no God alive to pray to those three days, no God to do anything for anyone. Satan could have taken over the entire universe since "God" was dead. Satan is powerful and could have caused complete chaos for the earth, worse than we see now, if there was no God more powerful to prevent him from doing so.
This Scripture also shows that Jesus cannot be God--""No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father." (Mark 13:32 ) NIV
If Jesus were God who knows all things, then he would know the day and hour, but he doesn't because Jesus is not God. And the holy spirit is not even mentioned.
Christendom has misled so many people by teaching them such a false pagan doctrine. If only people could come to know the true God (Psalms 83:18) and who he really is. Jesus tried to tell people about his Father and that they should worship his Father alone.
Two reasons people believe in such doctrines are found at
2 Timothy 4:3-4--"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables." and at John 12:39-40--"Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again: “ He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, Lest they should see with their eyes, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.”
Also Satan could never tempt Almighty God-- but Satan knew he could tempt God's Son who as a human had free will and so he tried. How grateful we are that Jesus did not allow his enemy to succeed.

I would answer, but like the responses given so far. So, I'll give an analogy. I have a name made up of three parts. First, middle, and last. I am the same person, and you can call me by my first, middle, or last name (although hardly anyone would call me by my middle name except my wife when she wants to make fun of me.) They serve as one name, but each has a specific job to identify me. First name is informal. Last name can be more formal, maybe even used to show respect, and my middle name is for those who know me intimately.
Not sure how this defines us as christians other than the understanding of common doctrine. Sorry can't give a good answer to that part of the question, but it really isn't a qualifier of salvation (understanding the Godhead or trinity). It is a very difficult to understand part of christianity that one should seek in a godly way of seeking His truth. Look to His word and He will reveal it to you, if you seek with all your heart, mind, and soul.

The 3 is prevelant in many faiths.
We see LIFE as coming down to us from a higher level. But if
my understanding is correct. The Source of Life is actually
in the CENTER of things.
Draw a circle with a center. If the Lifeforce flowed from that
center outward, wouldn't it flow in a pyramid shape?
This is the basis for the 3. Pyramid power!
The human being itself is a PARADOX. We are both a
physical and spiritual being. So our world is full of these
paradoxes.
The Trinity is a paradox. The GODHEAD, Father, Son,
and Holy Spirit, are not three beings in one. But on a
spiritual level, there is no DIVISION. As all our spirits are
a part of our Creators own body.

I had a long conversation about this with a friend, I couldn't understand how people could see the trinity as 1.
the conclusion we came to is that the Trinity is like a Tree with a trunk that forks into 3 parts. for the christian, this is all one tree, and thus one God.
and Judaism(and from my understanding Islam)'s "strict monotheism" God wuld be more represented by a perfect stone Obelisk. no forks, no splits, no distinct parts, absolutely 1.
and more specifically to preempt warpings of this analogy... the Facets of the obelisk are not "separate" as they are no more than different angles of viewing the same "object" aspects of the one object (one facet can't see another... for example) and the atoms and subatomic particles that the obelisk consists of, are not "separate" any more than we are as many "people" as we are cells that our bodies are made of.

it three parts to the same God but the three part fulfill different fuctions in the faith . you get the father , the son(Jesus) and the holy ghost/spirit. the father is God and master of the universe, who created all things. the Son is the concection between God and man and interseds on our behave . the holy ghost is someone that is your convection and guides you in your quest to build a stronger relationship with God. other religion have the teired cosmo as well but the trinty.

God's Word clearly states that God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit are One.
Whenever you see someone claim to be a Christian, but deny that Truth, then they are not a Christian for they are calling God a liar.
The confusion is that Jesus was here in the flesh, but He stressed that people are NOT to worship things of the flesh, and that meant not to worship Him in the flesh, but to worship the spirit God, of which He is a part.
