By showing them love, compassion, trust and lots of communication. But at the same time, don't let yourself be
manipulated.

Children are very delicate, too much the become spoilt too little then its pretty much neglect. Its hard to find the right balance, some kids are naughty to attract attention. The best way is tell the kid off when he is naughty i.e send him/her to bed for 10mins or have a time out senario so he realizes that being naughty will not get your attention. If the kid is good but asks to play a game if you can play, play, if you can't promise that you will play later when you are free.
Hope this helps

Well, children, are by nature, selfish. However, I find that the children who act out the most are usually in the most need of attention.
Start by putting aside everything else, and devoting 20 minutes totally to the child every day. Do let anything interfere--not the phone, not dinner, not your spouse. As soon as the child can count on your undivided attention, he'll soon look forward to it. Once you've got his trust, then you can work on how to schedule that time, but you must make this investment!

the sad thing is in todays society people are having babies and then are giving more time to the demands of work than they do to their kids... I mean why even have kids if you are going to dump them in day care or with sitters?? why have kids if when you come home from work you are too tired to play with them??
if kids want attention its often because they are not getting it... or sometimes its to reaffirm that they are loved... if parents have 2 kids its usually the younger who gets more attention - often leaving the older one feeling unloved.. and later in life this will cuase problems
parents MUST find time to spend with their kids.. the BEST thing is to give the kid attention BEFORE the kid asks for it...you dont want to give into a kid every time it asks for something BUT you dont want to deprive a kid of attention
SO... you must give the child attention BEFORE it feels despirate for attention

Spend quality time with him/her. and really interact with him. i.e. play with him, talk with him, romp around with him, frolic with him, even if you appear like a kid too...be like him in his childlike insouciance.
