Almost three days, and one time almost a week in the army. You go through all sorts of phases. The first phase is deep depression as you try to make it through the first night without sleep. You then pick up again with daylight. The next day you start experiencing blank outs - moments where you drift into sleep and then wake up again. By day three you go through feeling sick, blanking out, and then finally, you get hornier and hornier. Strangely it creates a hightened sexual arousal.

I've gone about 36 hours without sleep just to see how long I could go. When I did finally go to sleep, it felt so good. Some people don't need a lot of sleep. They say you should get about 7-8 hours of sleep, but some people are just high strung. If they don't feel tired after a couple of hours, then they're fine...for now. However, in the long run, it probably will catch up with them. They should see a doctor just to see how little this sleep is having an effect on their body.

I occassional have worked 48 hours on the go, but this is very unusual, it is only when the job really needs it to happen.

I am tried, but I normally just go and sleep for 5-6 hours, then catnap the rest of the day if I am not working and catch up.

Your friend might be ok on 1-2 hours sleep, because he does that say twice a day, and he is getting enough sleep. the other way is make sure he does some exercise, try taking him/her walking and knackering hoim out or getting him/her to relax in a bath for 30 minutes in some kind of foam bath.

Just leave him alone and he will tell you what is wrong eventually.

I used to go on about 2 hours of sleep a day, and sometimes I would just not go to bed. I have insomnia so my sleeping habits were a bit beyond my control. I didnt feel too bad, because after your body gets into no sleep mode it learns to function in that mode. If they wont go see a doctor then there isnt much you can do beyond just reminding them you are worried about them. Maybe if you keep telling them you are worried they will decide to do something about it. Good luck and dont give up.

I used to do "allnighters" all the time at Uni. This is when you stay up all night trying to finish an assignment that needs to be handed in the next day. With a combination of Pro Plus, Red Bull, Lucozade and black coffees, I was able to go to lectures and seminars and stay up until around 10.00pm, which is when I would begin to fell like s**t and have to go to bed. So that would be about 36 hours without sleep.

Is working for that long even allowed? Surely there is a cap of 40-50 hours per WEEK on working hours. I know I get tired after 15 hours tops, but even that includes a break or two.

I think the longest I have been without sleep would be about 19 hours.

I can never sleep on planes and I go to Singapore alot which is about 14hrs flight time and then a am awake for a few hours until bedtime.

if this person has been doing this for a long time then your body gets used to it its like when women have a baby they only get a few hours a night but you survive. when i was in labour with my little girl for 5 days i only had about 2 hours or so each day i was exhausted. then i had to give birth as well.

i pull all nighters for college sometimes, after the 20th hour the tiredness kicks in but if your doing a project of somethin, coffee gets you over the next 6 hours or so but after that its like your brain starts to shut down so its always best to have like a half hour power nap, really does the trick. feel like s**t with less thyan half a brain for bout 3 days after.
