Tax exemption has nothing to do with whether the organization is religion-based or not.
Exemption is granted from property taxes on property used for the organization's exempt purpose , but it's correct as someone stated that a 501c(3) organization would pay real estate taxes on property used for example as rental property to make money.

Your state should have a statute that exempts certain properties from the real estate tax. The statute usually exempts non-profits, such as, churches, schools, hospitals, public charities, etc.. Havings said this, there are circumstances that can cause a non-profit to pay real estate taxes on the property they own, because the non-profit might rent or use their property for a moneymaking venture. Check with your State and County to get a specific answer for your individual case.
