My newphew is about to turn 5, any parents out there have any good ideas for a gift? He has so many toys already and we have a big family so he gets so many gifts, I wanted to get him something different. He loves trains, construction vehicles, power rangers, all the typical boy stuff.

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

Is there a favorite place that he loves to go to? One that maybe he has been asking to go to for awhile? If he gets a bunch of toys from everyone else...maybe your best gift would be a gift of a wonderful memory. Take him somewhere that he enjoys. Take lots of pictures. Maybe there you can pick up a little knick-knack for him to remember your day out by. Once home get the pictures developed. By a unique frame and pick your favorites out of the pictures you took. Wrap that and have him unwrap it. Discuss the things you did on his birthday retreat. You are giving him a gift of memory. Toys come and go but memories are always there. It makes for a great time and a wonderful bonding session with your son.

My kids are 5 and 7. Until they are about 7 You can go to any dollar store and buy one of those big bags and just go down the aisles and put one of everything in the bag. $20 tops or whatever you want to spend and the kid is happy as can be. The get 20 presents vs. only one. Mostly toys. Which last a minute anyway and then they break them, lose them, feed them to the dog and whatever. This is an inexpensive and quick gift for any child. I do it for my kids and all their friends. They love it. Now if he's bit more responsible than your typical 5 year old find something he can treasure for his whole life. The Polar Express was popular this past Christmas--maybe the book and/the movie maybe write a personal message inside. Maybe a model he can put together and keep in his room. Collections are special and good for a lifetime. Maybe start him with a collection of trains.

I love to no only get but GIVE out gifts that the PARENTS actually need as well. So if he needs clothes, why not Batman or Spiderman clothes or something like that, or does he need some cool Pj's?

How about something for his room does he need a warm Superman fleece throw for his bed? Does he need a cool nightlight lamp? A kid's desk to do art on? How about sheets for his bed (like with characters on them?) Books you can never go wrong on!

You could do like a "burger" place gift card or pizza place to go take the whole family out to dinner.

If he really has EVERYTHING and parents are well-off and don't need more stuff. Just hit the dollar store and stock up on 4 items...really I've done it for tons of kids and they don't care if it's form the dollar store or even know! Don't waste your money if you don't want to!

Books, books and more books.

However, it isn't always easy to find out which ones they already have. Why not ask his parents if he already had the Brio wooden train system (or one of the generic Brio-a-likes), or if he likes LEGO. The beauty of this is that extra bits are always appreciated, becasue they add to the original system and take it further, and the parents will like it because it isn't another piece of d**n plastic rubbish lasting two seconds, never played with, and cluttering up the place. With both systems it doesn't matter if the kid already has it - in fact that makes it better!

(Also not bad for the environment as well as the parents and children because Brio and LEGO last ages, and are easily eBayable when the kids grow out of them.)

Books, books, books. Kids can never have too many books. Either that or give him tickets to an amusement park or indoor playground. That won't clutter up his room and he'll have a great time. Or go to a train museum if there is one close, or a dinosaur museum, or one of those discovery land type things.

We have a train station up the road from our house...and if our 5 yr old liked trains..We'd probably take the TRAIN into Boston and let him look out the window the entire time...
