If the body in the morgue it should be OK. If it's road kill and still there it'll be a little worse for wear in 3 days & smell to high heaven. ;-)

I am not sure why this in R&S but you left a lot of variables open. Are we discussing a cadaver left out in the open without any covering? Or is the body somewhere with covering over it, say a blanket? What time of year is it? Is it hot outside, or cold? Is the body in water or liqid of some sort? Is it fly season? What are the conditions in the area for wildlife? Could the body have been carried away from the original seen by an animal? Work with me here. You have to have a little more info. If it was really cold and the body was covered somewhat it would probably show little or no evidence of outward decomposition and may have very little if no odor apparent. If it is mid-August , say in Georgia, the state of decomposition would likely have begun and any spots where sores or cuts were would have begun to be infested with fly larvae, i.e maggots. It would quite possible smell pretty foul. However, it would still be possible to identify the body.

The body would be in the beginning stages unless it were in heat and exposed to sun then it may be a little bit further along. Yes, there would be an unpleasant smell related to the state of the body if left unattended.

Why?

It's going to depend on the conditions in which it is kept or the location where the person died.
