Some chest pains are minor problems such as muscle aches and gas bubbles. Others are more serious such as an inflammation of the lining of the heart or lungs, ulcers, gallbladder attack, acid reflux or blood clots to the lung.
Heart pains generally are located under the breastbone or across the upper chest. They may also go down either arm (not just the left arm), up to the neck or jaw, or through to the back.
Most people describe heart pain as a deep pressure, ache, burning or squeezing. Some say it is like a belt tightening around their chest or a heavy brick laying on them. Rarely is heart pain sharp like a knife or excruciating like hitting your thumb with a hammer.
Often heart pain is accompanied by other symptoms, most commonly profuse sweating, nausea, dizziness or difficulty breathing.
Heart pains are often provoked or worsened by emotional stress or physical activity, but they can also come on when you are doing nothing more than reading or watching TV. They don't come and go in a few seconds, rather heart pains generally build up and go away over a minute or two.
Don't goof around with chest pains. Stop doing whatever you are doing. Don't wait until morning to see if they will be better. You should call 911 immediately if you have unexplained chest pains that:
Last more than 10-15 minutes.
Are associated with difficulty breathing or dizziness.
Or if you are a known heart patient, call if the pain is not relieved by taking 3 nitroglycerin tablets taken over a 15 minute period
Since yours has gone on for a long time you should see a doctor.

Heart pains tend to be more a pressure pain and do not normally go away but increase, suggest you get to doctor and stop wasting time. If it is not a heart issue it could be on left side a muscular problem.

Get to a doctor NOW.
Don't waste time. This your bodys way of warning you that there could be something seriously wrong.
Of course, it may turn out to be something and nothing, but you can't take that chance. It could just as easily be a build-up to a heart attack.
Remember, contrary to popular beleif, even healthy people die from heart attacks.

most likely it is stress and an incorrect diet.
try to organise some time out, and use it for walking or sitting down reading a book as the mood takes you.
I get those pains, and I have found cigarettes to be very effective at alleviating them but that may not suit you.

It can be anything from a simple heart burn to a really serious heart condition. Stop wasting time in forums where anyone can answer and see a real doctor and give him details. You may need tests. GO SEE A DOCTOR NOW.

The only answer I can give is SEE A DOCTOR. It could be a problem with your heart. Not even an online doctor can diagnose your ailment without an examination.

It could be from anxiety. my sister use to have panic attacks for no reason what so ever. When this happens all muscles tighten including the heart which could be causing stabbing pains.

It's most likely indigestion (heartburn), but see your doctor in case it's something more serious. If the doc can't find anything wrong with you, try cutting sugar out of your diet.

It sounds like gall bladder problems. A stone may be blocking your bile canal.
It also may be Pancreatitis, which, if it acute, is extremely serious and may be lethal. My husband had this condition and described it exactly as you do "like being stabbed with a knife".He nearly died .Please make the time to see a doctor immediately.
