i need to transfer the data from my laptop to desk PC. How can I do that without using CD/DVD media?
What cable connections would I need?

I agree a USB pen-drive is easiest ...but...you could try a network cable ... if both machines are running XP then it's simple ... you need a "crossover" cable ... not the standard blue patchlead ... run the network wizard on both pc's and follow the instructions .... then .... Bingo .... you should be able to see one computer from the other
But go with the USB pendrive if you just want to transfer data

A crossover cable and two network cards and make the desktop the proxy server will work the best. Easy to set up with Window wizards to help. No big deal let the wizards walk you through it.

Buy a LAN card and configure one computer as the proxy server.

if you have a router and both pcs are hooked into it yhen its as simple as turning on your file and printer sharing
