cut it in half, sprinkle sugar on the top, cut down the side of each little segment with a knife and use a small spoon to scrape each segment out.
Then if you want, turn it upside down and squeeze all the juice into your bowl and drink that down!!!
love grapefruit myself!

How should you eat!
The never get everything out - part is ably answered by several posts.
Buy a Grapefruit Knife and a set of Grapefruit spoons.
Slice the Grapefruit in 2, and slide the serrated edge down the inside of the pith seperating the segments skin from the pith (or if preferred try a more advanced technique and slide it down the inside of the segment skin and the contents of the segment).
Once you have got down the outer wall to the curve - a gentle sawing motion should help you loosen the contents all the way to the centre. Repeat this process as you revolve the grapefruit , until all the segments have been loosened from the pith.
If you have not done it perfectly, or the juiciness, prevented you from completing the task as completely as you had intended - using a Grapefruit Spoon to eat it makes it easier to loosen any still attached elements as you are lifting the segment out on it's way to your waiting mouth.
How should you eat it! Anyway you feel like at the time.
My favourite time is breakfast, and two of my favourite breakfast grapefruit treats are :
to sprinkle brown sugar on top of the exposed (pre-prepared) fruit and grill until the sugar melts and runs -
OR -
To sprinkle a quality white sugar over the exposed surface at supper time, and refrigerate overnight - in the morning the sugar has set to a crunchy topping.

As loads of people have said...
get a grapefruit knife and grapefruit spoons.
If you really like grapefruit it is a worthwhile investment.
But don't smother the thing in sugar... really bad idea!

I have special grapefruit spoons! they have a pointed end to the spoon and they're serrated so they get into the bottom of the segments easily. i got them at a home store, they normally sell them in packs of 4 i think.
you still get squirted in the eye tho!

I like them best with sugar on top. Spooning them out is not that easy, so you should carve the parts out with a sharp knife first.
but the best thing is:
A GRAPEFRUIT SPOON, with a sharp edge for the optimal spooning experience

put in in your mouth, (thats the hole in the lower part of your face) with the white things that are in there (they are called teeth) you must move these up and down until the grapefruit is nice and soft and wet, then you swallow (this should be an automatic response to having food in your mouth)

Eat it like an orange or you could put half of it in a bowl with a little sugar the night before and have it for breakfast, hope this helps.
