Depends on what kind of alerts. For e-mail alerts you can use Yahoo! Messenger for Yahoo e-mail and Windows Live Messenger or MSN Messenger for MSN and Hotmail e-mail and Google Talk for Google e-mail.

Or, you can try widgets. Widgets have alerts for many things. Check http://widgets.yahoo.com/ for more on widgets.
