Your friend may have the genetic condition called Trimethylaminuria, or "TMAU" for short. There is a lot of information online about this disease - just enter "TMAU" or "trimethylaminuria" into an Internet search engine. TMAU can cause bad body odors (and bad breath) in persons who have this disease. The only symptom of TMAU is the odor, and people with TMAU are otherwise healthy. The body odor is not caused by a lack of personal hygiene. In fact, a person with TMAU can smell horribly 10 minutes after they shower. The odor can resemble that of rotting fish, urine, feces, or garbage. People affected by TMAU can also have a musty smell.

The strength of the odor caused by TMAU varies from person to person, and may also vary over time. Some people with TMAU may only have a faint odor, while others with TMAU may have a very strong odor. A person with TMAU may smell strongly on some days, and not as strongly on other days. Sometimes the odor can be so strong that it can permeate an entire room in a matter of minutes. For women, the odor typically gets worse around their periods. Stress can also cause an increase in the odor.

As I said, the odor is not affected by personal hygiene. The TMAU odor is caused because the person's liver does not produce an enzyme that is necessary to break down a nutrient - the nutrient choline - that is found in almost all foods. The liver of a person with TMAU can only break down choline into a very smelly state; people without TMAU can break down choline all the way, so it doesn't smell anymore.

There is currently no cure for TMAU. People with TMAU may not be able to smell themselves, because they have been living with the odor their entire life.

first depends on where the odor is coming from...might be a feminine thing...my friends mom was same way but it wasn't so much as some sweat as was odor from her female side(best way i know to put it)....tell your friend u tried this new deodorant and it smells great and she should try some or just be blunt and ask her some questions or every time u are with her say i smell something odd do you, maybe after a few times she will get hint that it may be her.....how well do u know her and her habits?....buy her one of those bath kits with shampoos and soaps etc...(ones like at christmas time)....good luck in your endeavor

Take her aside and do it sensitively as a friend. There are some good suggestions here. Teenagers may not know how to deal with the changes in their bodies like this - you can also help her to choose a really good antiperspirant and some perfume. Tell her to try different types and to avoid synthetic clothing around the armpits. Others are right - tell her you're telling her because you're a friend and you don't want others noticing.

Same thing happened with an empoyee of mine.

I pulled him aside privately and told him I needed to talk to him but that is was going to be an uncomfortable conversation.

I told him that other people had noticed it and that I didn't want other people to judge him as a person over it.

I could have just quoted company policy about personal hygene but I think he really appreciated me just talking to him like a person. He was unaware of it and corrected immediately.

Also on a more serious note - that is serious warning sign of depression and/or susbstance abuse and you may want to get them help.

I guess what I am getting at is there may be an underlying cause.

It is also a legitimate medical condition that some people suffer from.

Just be compassionate if you feel compelled to say something

it's called tough love...just say it, or say something like "I often worry about my Body Odor cos I read you can't smell your own. Do you ever worry about your B O?" that could be your icebreaker! Then if she says no, you can launch into how often others can smell u even if you cant smell yourself etc etc! you're actually doing her a favour...she will eventually realise this!

Honesty is the best policy, you can't skirt around this one, just be upfront and say - god you stink (with a cheeky grin of course), I've done it before and it did work, i didn't get a slap !

good luck !

Might make it easier if you turn things around, ask her if she thinks you have bad body odor. say you can smell it. ask if she can smell it aswell, Its hard and you dont want to make her feel bad, she's your friend. She's your friend so you have to do something.

if she's a good friend she will accept you're telling her for her best interests and not to be cruel take perfume around with you and when you spritz yourself ask if she wants some on

stop hinting and just tell her. Say, "umm.i don't want you to be offended but you have body odor that might cause others to be repulsed. " "Please, take care of it before someone really embarrasses you."
