A Child's Python can be quite aggressive and bite frequently. I wouldn't recommend it to begin with. If you want a python, go for a Royal/Ball Python.

I keep snakes, and they are wonderful pets. I'm not sure on Australia's laws, but you shouldn't need a license to keep harmless snakes like corns and royal pythons. Exotic pets do have strict requirements however so be sure to do your research.

If you have questions about royal pythons put some more information in this question and I'll edit this to answer them for you ;-)

EDIT: I just checked for you, and you will need a Class 1 license to keep a Children's Python.

Yes... well I have a cat, and 4 snakes. My cat doesn't like the snakes and one of the snakes (ball python) hates the cat. They just generally avoid each other. But yeah, they can live fine together. Maybe if you have an especially mean spirited or mischievous cat or a snake that escapes a lot out to where the cats roam around you might have a bit of a problem. But other wise they should be fine. Just keep the tank very secure, and you should be good.

Start out with a colubrid like a corn or king snake or a ball python. You should be fine with a children's python, but it will be easier for you if you pick a super-hardy species like the ball. I am not sure if you are allowed to possess them in AU so this advice may do you no good.

Just make sure that you have the enclosure ready before you get your herp. Test you warm/cold sides for a day or two before you out your snake in. It's like getting a goldfish: the enclosure is as important as the health of your snake.

Best of luck!

I've owned a few in my life as well as being a reptile wrangler for a time.

For a child, I'd stick with snakes that can be easily handled, offer little physical threat, and can then be given easily up at some .

An example, here in the uSA would be a corn/rat snake.

The link above is a reptile auction site I visit, but certainly anyone who is a dealer, or who raises snakes can help. Below is a link to a seller who I'm sure wouldn't mind offering advise.

Well... no you don't have to have a license to have one. I have a ball python...if you lived in the states you could buy mine. He is older and not aggressive. I got him when he was a baby and never had any problems. My point with that is that if you get a baby one that has been held and is used to people then you should not have any problems with it. Just keep it used to you. You will need to take time with it. Don't ever let it sense any fear either... they take advantage of it.
