An automatic gearbox is the single most difficult item on a modern car to repair. Only attempt it if.. A: you've budgeted for a new one anyway, so what the hey? B: you're an experienced transmission specialist. I had to get one overhauled a few years ago due to the clutches being worn ( there were 7 clutches in my BMWs box!), & the guy who did the job explained a bit about autoboxes. I've removed & stripped an engine, but I wouldn't attempt an automatic gearbox.

I think the old ones had a rod from the throttle linkage and a vacuum hose that regulated downshift. The rod can be loose, the vacuum hose can be off or leaky, or the modulator that the vacuum hose hooks to on the transmission can be bad.
