I absolutely LOVED the Silmarillion by Tolkien. I actually prefer it to the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. But that's not because it's easier than the others. Quite the opposite, it has a completely different feel to the rest of the books. It's more lyrical. More magical in some ways. Sort've the 'sacred' text of the series. It's more complex. More confusing. And not essential to understanding the others at all. But depending on personal taste of course, you might find it worth your while. It sort've goes from a creation-type story. To various mythological and historical ages of elves and men and dwarves and whatnot.

But a book I can recommend to all Tolkien fans is Here There Be Dragons by James A. Owen. It is a new YA fantasy book (for people of all ages!!) and it has more than enough to satisfy Tolkien fans. One of the fictional heroes is none other than a young Tolkien!

The silmarillion is sort of the middle earth equivalent to the bible.

The writing style is very, very different from "The Hobbit" and lord of the rings books. If you aren't really into the details of the middle-earth framework, to a degree that borders on anal retentiveness, it might be a dull read.

It isn't written in King James English, but it is very dryly written. A history told by a librarian with very little fire to it. Some nice poetic bits but not a very dramatic narrative.

I'd recommend that you leaf through it to get a feel for how you like the writing style at a library or book store before you take it home and curl up with it.

The Silmarillion is an pleasing e book. even as i visit confirm why some human beings does not locate it worth their attempt and time...i became beaten with its elegance. it really is different from The Hobbit and the Lord of the earrings trilogy. those were particularly instantly ahead. They gave you a sparkling undemanding-to-understand adventure/quest plot to follow. The Silmarillion is unlike the different novel i have ever study. sure, it has puzzling names. sure, it has puzzling countries to save up with. in spite of the indisputable fact that that is the WHY in the back of all of it. in case you are able to imagine it really is even more effective philosophical than the LOTR ever dreamed of being...it really is written like its sacred heritage. that is staggering. you're examining it, and also you comprehend that is all make-believe...yet for some reason it quite works. that is pleasing. you want those type of epic thoughts of elves to be authentic. All that being suggested, I loved The Silmarillion more effective than LOTR and the Hobbit. in spite of the indisputable fact that, I understand that everyone's tastes are different. I do imagine that you may want to provide it a attempt although. study the first few chapters, and also you may both be bored to lack of existence and not in any respect want to %. it up back...or you'd be spellbound. (even although, one answerer became nicely perfect in saying that not all chapters or divisions are both astounding. some thoughts are more effective perfect than others.)

Read lord of the rings and all the appendices first, and then try the silmarillion, as it's a lot heavier going than the hobbit. Also try the unfinished tales as well.

I have. It would be best to read The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings books first.

It is more historical background than a story.
