I smoke because I enjoy it. I like the smell of tobacco. Yes I am aware of the dangers, I do not smoke in front of,or around the house or kids (mine or others) No I will NOT sue the tobacco company if I get cancer, I know the risks and choose to take them. I have no respect for people that do. Take responsibility for your own actions. I also have no use for those that preach about it to me.

I smoked for fourty years-It was addictive-I would smoke one now if I had one but have chosen not to buy any more but if I'm having a beer in a bar I will definity try to bum one. Once the nicotene gets in your system it wants to maintain a certain level and when the level drops you need a fix. My system is almost cleaned out now but I still have a tiny craving but not like it was when I first quit. I guess getting older and realizing I'll get broker and be subceptible to health problems if I continue to smoke help me quit. I have saved over 1500 bucks since janruary this year by not buying cigarettes and feel healthier.

it's addictive and very difficult to quit. while you're doing it, you don't notice the smell, and the yellow fingers don't seem too disgusting. everyone else just seems to be a whinger and you just keep on smokin....
it also kind of brainwashes you into thinking that the ciggies help you, but it just releives the cravings. all you know though is that having a ciggie makes you feel a bit better... nasty little cycle.

and all the warnings people give you - health problems, money, the stink... they all just wash over you... even tyhough you may know someone who's died from smoking or is ill, you have plenty of time to stop before anyrthuing happens to you... you can quit next month....
and you've heard it all before so you switch off...

once you stop, you do feel better, and you notice the stink...

sorry for rambling.

people smoke for many different reasons. some for stress relief, for others its peer pressure. for most people though, it's because they are addicted. they started smoking for one reason or another, but they continue to smoke because they can't stop. the addiction is very strong. they continue to smoke because the process of quitting is rough. and it's much easier to just light up and satisfy the craving than it is to go through the hardships of quitting. it's very hard to quit. i've done it... twice. even when the physical nicoteen addiction is overwith (the hard part) you're stuck with the mental craving for a very very long time. years...and to continue to be a non-smoker means fighting that mental craving, that memory of how good cigarettes were.
hope that answers your question.

I am 52 years old and started smoking when i was 10. Nicotine is a habit and a very hard habit to give up. I know its bad for my health but it also makes me feel good. The easiest way to give up smoking is to NEVER start.

additives and carcinogens in cigarettes are very addictive,, they dont make it easy to quit,, thank god i did in 1998 and after 13yrs of smoking im so glad i quit,, not only healthwise,, but sheesh it cost almost $5 a pack here in michigan,, sheeshhh,,,,

i was at almost 3 pks a day before i quit,,, i can taste and smell food better than i ever remember,, i can breathe so much better ,,, i just feel better overall,, the one thing that is a negative when quitting is weight gain,, you will too,,, and i had never been over 170 lbs in my life im 5'6" ,, w/ in 6 mos i went to almost 256 lbs,, and even after getting most of the fatty weight off im still over 235,,, still working hard,, the reason you gain so much weight is that your hands natural reaction is to go straight to the mouth w/ something in it,, and until you kill that craving,, youll always find yourself in a rutt,, but hey its the best thing i couldve ever done for myself,,, dont ever really know why i started,, but am sure about why i quit,, and dont ever have any craving of ever going back ,,,,, thanks for askin

Usually, people smoke because the nicotein in the cigarette relaxes them (and they're addicted.)

And if you're talking about illegal stuff...

Some people smoke to seem cool
Others do it because their life sucks and it helps them get away
Many more do it because it's something to do

However.... in the process, you lose all enthusiasm and willingness. You don't feel like going to the park because you'd rather stay in one place and smoke.

I smoked because it was the cool thing to do and it made me look older.

I continued to smoke for I was addicted to it... I felt the NEED for it.

I quit smoking because it was the healthy thing to do and now I will look younger than those my same age who have not quit.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaah life is good AND fair ~!

im 36 and i've never heard a good reason why people smoke.
the poor reasons are as follows:

peer pressure; some idea that you have to do as others do or you wont fit in.

think it looks good; just as sad as the first reason, youngsters with no real confidance feel it makes them look older=more mature.

i can think of many lame excuses for smoking, but they all revolve around a weak personality. of course addiction soon kicks in, but you'd have to be a moron before you got to that point.
surely?

i'm a smoker, and i haven't found out why yet !! it gives me, i'd say, a sense of relaxation after a long day and sometimes it really stresses me out. ofcourse each person has his/her own reasons for smoking.
