If you're aware of it you see reference/homage of his work in almost every film or TV show aswell as in advertising and in the use of music (eg the new sony TV add with the paint ripped off the opening fight scene in Clockwork Orange and all space scenes use the music from 2001 a Space Odyssey).

No, not really, though I admire Kubrick for his daring, vision, spare dialogue...most favorite of his flicks is 2001...but also really like The Shining. Kubrick should have his own "light" and probably will given another 25-50 years.

He needs to be seen in a different light because his expression is basically freer, less bounded. To ask if he should be seen in the same light as Michelangelo or Shakespeare is to diminish the understanding of (his) creativity.
